5 perfect signings Michael Edwards could bring to Liverpool

Liverpool are headed for a new era, as Jürgen Klopp will officially step down from his position as the club’s manager at the end of the 2023/24 season, which could even conclude in a second Premier League title for the Reds under Klopp’s leadership.

After weeks of pursuing a reunion, it looks like Liverpool will secure as their CEO again. Edwards was also crucial in building Liverpool into the power it is today, working side-by-side with Klopp to recruit up-and-coming stars and help sign top players at affordable prices.

Here are five top signings Edwards could help Liverpool get done in the summer 2024 transfer window.

RB Leipzig AM Xavi Simons

Xavi Simons has been one of the stories of the Bundesliga this season, building on a quietly incredible 2022/23 season with PSV. It looks like Simons’ future is in PSG‘s hands while on loan at RB Leipzig, but the Dutch playmaker likely aspires for more.

The 20-year-old is a prime candidate for another transfer, and Liverpool would do well to sign one of the Bundesliga’s absolute top players right now, even if he isn’t getting the same hype as his up-and-coming counterparts in Leverkusen.

Simons is playing almost every position in the attack for Leipzig, enjoying a similar (but different) freedom to what Christopher Nkunku enjoyed in Leipzig upon becoming a legitimate Ballon d’Or candidate before his move to Chelsea.

With time and the right environment, Simons can become a Ballon d’Or-level player in his own right. A young leader, he fits the profile of the kind of player Edwards would love to bring to Liverpool.

Napoli LW Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

There may be no bigger dream get for the Reds than Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, even though they do have a top-class left winger in Luis Díaz.

The problem is that as exciting as Díaz was in the 2021/22 season when Liverpool nearly won the Champions League, the former Porto man has been too inconsistent in 2023/24.

Díaz may not have enough end product to be a true superstar for the Reds, and with Mohamed Salah‘s future potentially in Saudi Arabia in the next few years, the club needs to think about adding a winger who can reliably go 10 and 10 or even 20 and 20.

Enter Kvaratskhelia. The reigning Serie A Player of the Year will be even more expensive than Victor Osimhen, and that’s because he is a less injury-prone and more impactful player.

Edwards is an ace at signing superstars to deals that Liverpool can actually swallow. If anyone can finagle a fair deal with Napoli’s Aurelio de Laurentiis, then it is the new/old CEO.

Bayer Leverkusen DM Exequiel Palacios

Liverpool should sign a new midfield general to help support the spine of the team, and while they did add a quality and very underrated player from the Bundesliga this past summer in Wataru Endo, the former Stuttgart man isn’t exactly an every-game starter for a club like this one.

However, Exequiel Palacios is. He has been as good as anyone on Leverkusen this season, even Florian Wirtz and Alex Grimaldo. The 25-year-old has gone from “good” to “world-class” under the tutelage of a man who once owned his position.

Xabi Alonso could very well be the next manager of Liverpool, pending his thoughts on staying in Leverkusen or even joining title rivals Bayern Munich (another former club of his), which would surely help Edwards bring in Palacios.

Leverkusen know the value of their players and would set an even higher price if Alonso stays, but Palacios looks like a future Premier League standout.

Real Sociedad RW Takefusa Kubo

For a left-footed playmaker to join with Dominik Szoboszlai or even overtake the right wing, Liverpool could decide to sign one of LaLliga’s finest talents in Takefusa Kubo.

The former Real Madrid man could not have made a better decision than going to Real Sociedad, which has suited him far better than any of his previous stops in Spanish football – including Mallorca.

Kubo is a dynamic presence on the ball and the most electrifying player in San Sebastián, even though La Real do have a handful of other legitimately top-class LaLiga ballers.

With seven goals and three assists this season and nine goals and four assists last season, Kubo clearly has the end product to make a difference at Anfield.

Frosinone RW Matías Soulé

For a more recent breakout star in the right wing/playmaker role, Liverpool could join the list of many Premier League clubs interested in Matías Soulé, who is also on the radar of all the top German sides like Bayer Leverkusen.

Soulé may go down as another big talent Juventus didn’t rate properly, as the 20-year-old Argentinian has been one of the best players in Italian football this season, invoking the name of former Bianconeri icon Paulo Dybala.

He has 10 goals and 2 assists of his own in the 2023/24 season, creating chances like nobody’s business on a Frosinone side largely lacking in talent. Imagine what he could do with the players around him at Liverpool.
