Roma firing Daniele de Rossi vindicates Jose Mourinho, shows who the real problem is

Roma fans deserve better. Anyone who watches world football, specifically Serie A, understands the undying passion of the Roma faithful and has to feel for the fanbase – well, unless they are Lazio supporters – because it feels like the Giallorossi only experience heartbreak after heartbreak.

It truly seemed like they were building something special under The Special One himself, as Jose Mourinho immediately brought a fire and excitement back to a Roma side that suffered years of mediocrity after a brief spell of going toe-to-toe with titans of European football, buoyed by legends of the game Mohamed Salah and Edin Dzeko.

Mourinho got Roma to believe again, winning the Conference League title and coming – here’s that word again – heartbreakingly close to winning the Europa League a season later.

But in summer 2023, Roma’s incompetent ownership failed to listen to any of Mourinho’s requests to strengthen the squad, foreseeing a sharp downturn if Roma did not get serious.

They didn’t, keeping the worst starting goalkeeper in European football, Rui Patricio, in the back of the net, and the human sieve and the rest of Roma’s glued-together squad sputtered until Mourinho was made the scapegoat and promptly fired by the men responsible for the real ills in the capial.

Club icon Daniele de Rossi took over and seemed to turn fortunes around, and Roma actually finished sixth in the league. De Rossi is obviously no Mourinho, but the former Roma defensive midfielder showed the signs needed to potentially become a great coach.

If de Rossi does become a great manager in world football, though, it won’t be in Rome. That’s because after just four games, the Friedkin family have decided to fire the beloved figure, giving up on the manager they hired permanently to replace one of the GOATs.

It’s embarrassing in every way. Roma are only four points back of sixth, their finish last season, with an entirely new attack that has yet to gel. And de Rossi is thrown to the curb by ownership that clearly does not know how to run a successful club and has no concept of the words patience and sustainability.

Roma fans, you deserve better than this group of children throwing tantrums from their pulpit as the city, fanbase, players, and coaching staff work hard to build something.

Let’s just hope that the owners did not put a curse on the club by canning footballing royalty, Jose, in the most cruel of ways when the entire city loved him
