CM Gavi
Gavi has been out since Nov. 20 of last year when he suffered a torn ACL, but it won’t be long until the Barcelona star center midfielder makes his return to the Blaugrana lineup.
Last month, Gavi began practicing again with his teammates, and he is being eased along to make sure he has a full recovery. Tentatively, Gavi is expected to play again at the end of October or in early November.
A very optimistic timeline would have him return shortly after the October international fixtures, meaning he could be in the squad to face Real Madrid in El Clasico on Oct. 26
But is honestly more likely for him to return a week later for another big rivalry clash for Barcelona against local derby rivals Espanyol on Nov. 3.
AM Dani Olmo
Dani Olmo was the one big signing Barcelona could afford to make this past summer, and he’s already paying dividends for the Blaugrana with three goals in three games.
Unfortunately, the Spanish international suffered a muscular injury on Sept. 15 against Girona and has been out since. Olmo is expected to return right after the October international fixtures, with Barcelona optimistic their star attacking midfielder will be ready to face familiar foes Bayern Munich on Oct. 23 and Real Madrid in El Clasico on Oct. 26.
CB Ronald Araujo
Star center back Ronald Araujo suffered a right hamstring injury at Copa America this summer on July 15 that required surgery and was initially expected to take four months to recover from.
Currently, Araujo has been making great progress from the injury, as he began training again at the Barcelona facilities last month. It looks like he could be on track for an early November return against rivals Espanyol, though a Clasico appearance appears to be a stretch at this juncture.
CB Andreas Christensen
Barcelona’s best-performing center back since his arrival in 2022 as a free agent, Andreas Christensen has been the latest tough blow to the Barca starting lineup after it was announced at the end of August that the Danish international would need at least two months away from the team to recover.
Christensen has been dealing with nagging Achilles tendon pain going back to last season, so the club and the player felt it would be best for him to take some time to recover.
It seems like Barcelona would rather take longer for Christensen to return rather than rushing him back, with Hansi Flick telling reporters that he doesn’t want the center back at 80 percent; he prefers to have him helping the team to his maximum capacity.
We may not see Christensen on the pitch for Barcelona until 2025.
GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Marc-Andre ter Stegen ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee in a 5-1 win over Villarreal, and the club has already coaxed the best goalkeeper in Serie A, Wojciech Szczesny, out of retirement to supplement young goalkeeper Inaki Pena.
Ter Stegen will need at least eight months to recover from this injury and likely closer to ten, so, for all intents and purposes, his 2024/25 LaLiga campaign is over. The question is whether or not the captain will ever play for Barcelona again.
CM Fermin Lopez
Young attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez was underrated by Xavi last season, failing to get consistent minutes throughout the 2023/24 campaign despite a brilliant start to the season.
Lopez picked up where he left off under Hansi Flick before suffering a muscular injury in his left thigh against Girona, and then he suffered a setback with a new muscular injury in his right thigh before his return.
Fermin is fully expected to return after the international fixtures and should get minutes against Sevilla on Oct. 20.
DM Marc Bernal
Another young revelation to start the season, Marc Bernal also, sadly, picked up an injury just when he was beginning to turn heads. Worse yet, he won’t get a chance to come back soon like Fermin, as Bernal’s season is almost certainly over due to an ACL tear.
