Roma battling another Serie A club for one of the world’s most gifted wingers

Roma were one of the most active teams in Serie A during the summer 2024 transfer window, signing two of Europe’s most high-profile attacking players of the previous season in Girona’s Artem Dovbyk and Juventus loanee Matias Soule.

Those two now help form one of Italian football’s best quartets with Paulo Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini also in the mix, upgrading a Roma attack that disappointed last season after loan signing Romelu Lukaku failed to gel alongside La Joya.

So far in the 2024/25 season, though, Roma haven’t quite clicked, and the club’s notoriously impatient ownership already sacrificed club legend Daniele De Rossi, firing the promising manager who had already replaced the GOAT Jose Mourinho just a year earlier.

As Roma continue to flounder with consistency under imprudent ownership, they are at least navigating the transfer market for more attacking firepower, specifically an out-and-out winger to add dynamism to the attack.

According to Calciomercato.com, Roma are interested in signing one of the finest right wingers in the world, Lille’s Edon Zhegrova, who was already a breakout star in 2023/24 after flashing in 2022/23.

Now, the secret is fully out on Zhegrova after an inspired performance helped Lille upset Real Madrid in the Champions League this season. Per Calciomercato, Roma and fellow Serie A Champions League hopefuls Atalanta are both pushing to sign the 25-year-old forward.

Roma had been previously linked to Zhegrova this past summer but ultimately decided to sign the cheaper Soule, who is younger and more proven in Serie A. Juventus were also linked to Zhegrova in the summer and could be interested.

So far in the 2024/25 Ligue 1 campaign, Zhegrova has scored three goals with one assist in five matches for Lille, showing more goal-scoring prowess as he reaches the peak of his career. He’s also averaging a whopping two key passes and three dribbles completed per match.
