Tottenham lose their best possible Timo Werner transfer landing spot

Tottenham are shockingly in the bottom half of the Premier League table, but a recent 1-0 League Cup victory over league leaders Liverpool gives Ange Postecoglou’s men hope of a turnaround in the second half of the season.

The problem is that Spurs will need to make more moves in the January transfer window in order to ensure that they can even compete for European places again, as the summer signing of Dominic Solanke has proven inadequate in solving the team’s attacking woes.

Solanke himself has been one of the best Premier League strikers this season, but he’s not much of a goal-scorer and there’s been a lack of scoring around him, leading to the team’s interest in PSG transfer flop Randal Kolo Muani.

In order to sign Kolo Muani, Tottenham are going to need to make space for him by sacrificing a forward who isn’t scoring enough goals, and all eyes are circling around another former Bundesliga star in Timo Werner.

Kolo Muani’s old club, Eintracht Frankfurt, have been linked to Werner, especially in the case of a surprise winter move for the Eagles’ best player, breakout superstar Omar Marmoush, who is wanted badly by a struggling Manchester City.

However, German footballing insider Florian Plettenberg has doused several buckets of cold water on the Werner to Eintracht transfer rumors, calling the speculation “wide of the mark”, which has obviously cued a metric ton of puns about Werner’s lack of finishing prowess.

Tottenham don’t actually own Werner, who was loaned back to Spurs again for the 2024/25 season by RB Leipzig, which was surprising since Werner didn’t exactly light things up in six months last season.

Postecoglou wanted to give Werner more time, but, six months later, things have only gotten worse for the seemingly perennially disappointing German international.

A move back to the free-scoring Bundesliga looks like the best move for Werner, though even he was poor in his return to RB Leipzig, which, again, is why his best bet is to go to a club that is a little smaller than Leipzig.

Frankfurt are actually ahead of Leipzig in the table and favorites to secure Champions League football under Marmoush, so you can see why they may be lukewarm on Werner’s ability to help them.

If Tottenham can’t find someone else to take Werner on loan, they may have a tougher time fitting in someone like former Frankfurt star Kolo Muani, who appears to be their top forward target above the likes of potential loan signing Marcus Rashford.
