Arsenal decided not to sign a top striker in the summer 2024 transfer window, though the best options, like Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, weren’t really available.
Aside from Raheem Sterling, Arsenal didn’t make any significant attacking signings, and now that Kai Havertz is injured to further mount the issues up top, the Gunners are left floundering in the attack and well behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race this season.
Gyokeres and Sesko will continue to be priority transfer targets for Arsenal, but the North London giants will need to beef up their list of prospective hires with more ambitious names.
Alexander Isak has been the best striker in the Premier League this season
The most ambitious of them is Alexander Isak, with the Newcastle striker establishing himself as arguably the best at the position this season, in light of Manchester City’s struggles and Erling Haaland’s slight regression.
Isak has been money, but, alas, that means he will cost, ahem, money. Serious money. According to the latest report from Give Me Sport, Newcastle will want 120 million pounds in exchange for the 25-year-old Swedish marksman.
And when you look at Isak’s numbers, age, and trajectory, he is worth that kind of money on the open transfer market with all the big boys, like Arsenal, heavily interested in him – and Newcastle are no small club either with Champions League ambitions of their own.
This season, Isak has put up some monstrous stats with 19 goals and even 5 assists, quietly improving as a creator, which had long been tabbed as a weakness of his, dating back to his days at Real Sociedad.
Isak is also averaging a healthy 1.5 key passes and 1.4 dribbles completed per game, so there may not be a significant drop-off in all-around play between Isak and Havertz or Gabriel Jesus, while the Newcastle star would clearly bring much improved finishing to the table for the Gunners.
Arsenal have been reticent to spend 80 million euros on other strikers to this point on the transfer market, so the real question is if they will be willing to open their pocketbooks for a 120 million pound transfer, regardless of how brilliant the player is.
With Arsenal at risk of falling further behind in the Premier League title race, they will need to make splashy moves to improve their goal-scoring, and if there’s any chance they can sign Isak in the summer 2025 transfer window, they should take it. The problem is, 120 million pounds is the kind of money Arsenal simply don’t spend.
