The 3 worst contracts Liverpool must get rid of in summer 2025 transfer window

Here are three players Liverpool must get rid of in the summer 2025 transfer market in order to save money on their wages. All salary information is based on figures supplied by FBRef.com.

ST Darwin Nunez

It’s time for Liverpool to move on from Darwin Nunez. While the Uruguayan striker isn’t quite as bad as many fans will have you think and deserves a lot more credit for the chances he can create, Liverpool need a striker who is capable of being relied upon as a goal-scorer.

Nunez’s xG underperformance of nearly eight goals in the previous two Premier League seasons isn’t simply down to bad luck; it’s just how he is. He is responsible for some of the most laughable gaffes in front of goal in European football these last two seasons, and, as a striker, the work he does off the ball can’t overcome those serious deficiencies.

While Liverpool have a primary goal-scorer in Mohamed Salah and an emerging secondary option in Cody Gakpo, they need a better striker. Nunez is making more money per season than Gakpo, who has three more goals, and he’s also making more than double what Luis Diaz and Ibrahima Konate make – two players who are much more vital to the Reds’ starting lineup than Nunez is.

LB Andrew Robertson

Andrew Robertson was once the best left back in the world, but his days of being a starter for a Champions League and Premier League title contender like Liverpool are truly past him.

He’s been a liability all season long, regressing badly to a level even worse than his disappointing 2022/23 season. In spite of his decline, Liverpool have been the best team in Europe so far in 2024/25, but the summer 2025 transfer window is the opportunity to move on and sign someone who can nail down the left back position for the foreseeable future.

At about 8.3 million pounds per season, Robertson is the club’s fourth-highest earner after Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, who are all literally three of the best players in the world and still going very strong. Robertson’s wages are pretty close to untenable for Liverpool at this stage.

LW Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa isn’t technically a Liverpool player since he’s on loan from Juventus, but the larger point is that he surely won’t be playing for the Reds in any long-term capacity.

Liverpool have two significantly more productive left wingers in Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. Both are full-time members of the Liverpool squad and actually make less money per season than Chiesa, who earns a whopping 150,000 pounds per week for nearly 8 million pounds per season.

That’s a massive wage bill for a player who rarely plays, has serious injury concerns, and hasn’t been a consistent threat since 2020. Chiesa, in theory, should be as good as Diaz, but, in reality, doesn’t appear to have the quality to make the Liverpool squad.
