Manchester United make new GK a transfer priority in summer 2025

Manchester United will have a lot of work to do in the coming summer 2025 transfer window, as they are toiling away in the bottom half of the Premier League with little improvement to show for despite hiring one of the most highly-regarded young managers in world football in Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese coach still needs better players at pretty much every level of the squad, and while most transfer rumblings have remained focused on a new striker, Manchester United seem to be after goalkeeper help.

According to a report from the Muppetiers, via mufcmpb, Manchester United are now pivoting towards making signing a new goalkeeper one of their priorities in the summer 2025 transfer window, especially as an Andre Onana exit is becoming more likely.

Andre Onana is prone to errors

While Onana isn’t a bad keeper, he is a mistake-prone one and not someone Manchester United fans particularly feel safe with. He has been memed to the oblivion for inexplicable mistakes and judgment errors that no top keeper should be making.

Onana is exciting with the ball at his feet and very acrobatic with his reflex saves, but he is also poor at handling and the antithesis of the kinds of goalkeepers Manchester United were known for in the past like Edwin van der Saar and Peter Schmeichel.

Although Onana is far from United’s biggest problem and is actually about an average goalkeeper, it’s also reasonable for Manchester United to want to aim higher – and for someone more consistent.

Primeira Liga star and Portuguese international Diogo Costa will likely be a popular name linked to Man United this summer.
