With the 2026/27 Premier League season set to get under way in roughly one week, it’s time to take stock of the best defenses in the top flight. Because, as we all know, defense wins championships.
5. Chelsea
It may seem weird to rank Chelsea in the top five of the best defenses in the Premier League, but there is more that goes into ranking a defense than the center backs, which were a huge problem for the Blues last season – and even led to Enzo Maresca’s premature departure.
But Chelsea got better at center back by signing one of the league’s top ball winners in Maxence Lacroix, who will form a great duo when the latter is fully healthy. Losing Marc Cucurella is a huge blow, but Chelsea have young standouts to replace him – and Reece James, should the star right back get injured.
So much of what gets Chelsea to sneak in here, though, is based around the coaching prowess of Xabi Alonso and the quality of the defensive midfielders. Moises Caicedo is the best in the business at what he does, and Enzo Fernandez and Dario Essugo are no slouches either.
4. Manchester United
Manchester United are a well drilled machine all of a sudden under Michael Carrick, and they will be upset if they are not dark horse Premier League title contenders this season.
Injuries hurt Man United defensively, but when everyone is healthy, they have one of the deepest and most well rounded units. Leny Yoro taking a big step forward and Lisandro Martinez would seal the Red Devils as having one of the top defenses in the league.
3. Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham lost Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid this summer and Djed Spence to Inter Milan, yet their defense will be even better. That’s not only because of Roberto De Zerbi being there for a full season as manager, but it’s also because Spurs will be so much stronger in possession.
As Pep Guardiola taught the world, the best defense is simply having the ball, and Spain put on a clinic in that regard to remind everyone at the 2026 World Cup. Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie might be the Premier League’s best fullback duo when at 100 percent, while Marcos Senesi, Micky van de Ven, Jan Paul van Hecke, Kevin Danso, and Kota Takai is one heck of a center back quintet.
2. Manchester City
Ruben Dias is still around at Manchester City, and Abdukodir Khusanov is only going to get even better. Manchester City also still held onto the world class Josko Gvardiola, and, likewise, Matheus Nunes, Rayan Ait Nouri, and the gem Nico O’Reilly have nowhere to go but up.
But the real superstar for Man City’s defense is Marc Guehi. The winter addition was arguably the best center back in the Premier League last season, and after a full offseason, it is scary to think what he and the Citizens defense can do together.
1. Arsenal
After taking the Premier League title from Manchester City at long last, Arsenal’s defense have to watch their backs, because Man City will be coming at them with a vengeance this season. That being said, they have the best defense until proven otherwise.
Bruno Guimaraes adds more ball winning next to Declan Rice than Martin Zubimendi did in midfield to shield the league’s best center back duo in William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. And yes, Saliba will be injured to star the season, but the Gunners have a more than capable short term replacement in young Spanish center back Cristhian Mosquera.
