Arsenal didn’t need to sign another defender, but they made Aston Villa weaker and signed a starter for the English national team in Ezri Konsa, who has proved to be quite useful as a regular starter with superstar man William Saliba injured until December.
Gabriel Magalhaes, the best center back of the 2025/26 Premier League season when Arsenal won the title, praised Konsa heavily and planted the seed that Konsa can be a fixture for Arsenal’s lineup one day.
He said before the reunion game against his old club Lille in the Champions League, “Since he’s arrived at Arsenal, I think he’s adapted really quickly. He’s a top player and I really enjoy playing with him. We have the best centre-backs at Arsenal. We want to increase the level and we know he’s quality, and of course since he’s arrived, he’s played and I think we did well. Of course it’s different because I play with Saliba, we’ve played together for three or four years, so we’ve improved a lot these years. I think with Ezri it’s just the beginning. I think he’ll enjoy being here with us. We have a lot to improve, but I think we’re on the right track. He’s a good player, he’s a good person, it’s easy to be with him every day. He’s smart, [a] good guy, I think it’s natural so we enjoy [playing together].”
Now, Saliba is going to be back relatively soon, and nobody is going to unseat the Frenchman as a starter next to Gabriel. As the Brazilian international said, that partnership is airtight.
But Konsa has been great this season and is versatile enough to play center back or right back. There will be plenty of minutes for him available for Arsenal in the grueling season, even when Saliba comes back, and the burgeoning chemistry is something Arsenal fans can look forward to.
