AC Milan lost 3-1 to Liverpool in their Champions League opener, marking the latest humiliation suffered by the Rossoneri in the 2024/25 season since hiring Paulo Fonseca to replace Stefano Pioli.
The move by RedBird Capital to fire Pioli, who won the Scudetto in 2021/22, and replace him with Fonseca, who flopped at Roma, was met by raised eyebrows from many Milan fans and even club legends.
Fonseca has Milan 10th in the table in Serie A after four games, and after this latest defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, the calls for the former Lille coach’s job are growing.
According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, former Lazio and Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri is the name at the top of the list of candidate to replace Paulo Fonseca at AC Milan.
Per the report, Sarri, who resigned from Lazio near the end of the 2023/24 season, would be willing to take the Rossoneri job. Another well-known name in Serie A is on the shortlist, too, in Igor Tudor, who replaced Sarri at Lazio before leaving at the end of the season.
#SarriBall in Milan would be very interesting, and the former Chelsea coach does come with a stronger pedigree at the elite level than Fonseca. After all, he’s at least won Serie A before.
