It hasn’t taken long for AC Milan to second guess their own decision to hire Paulo Fonseca, who replaced Stefano Pioli despite coming in with zero major league titles whereas Pioli did win Serie A a couple of years ago.
After four matches in the league, Milan are in the middle of the table, while they just came off an embarrassing performance in the Champions League against another traditional power of the competition, Liverpool.
Milan seemed to be on the rise under Pioli, but, now, they risk falling flat on their faces after front office mismanagement. Fonseca is a scapegoat, in a way, but many around Milan, including club legends, felt the Fonseca hire was a poor one to begin with.
According to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, there are four candidates to replace Fonseca. Former Dortmund coaches Thomas Tuchel and Edin Terzic are on the list, while former Juventus managers Max Allegri and Maurizio Sarri are also options.
Sarri appears to be the favorite and has experience winning Serie A with Juventus. Meanwhile, Tuchel is the biggest name on the list and the only one to have won the Champions League (with Chelsea in 2021).
Allegri and Terzic are the least exciting. Although “Mad Max” built a streak of Scudetti in Turin and reached two Champions League Finals, his most recent work was appalling. Still, he finished above Milan in the table last season.
Terzic was pushed out of Dortmund, even after he reached the Champions League Final. That’s because he was woeful in the league and antagonized BVB’s two biggest club legends, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus. Hiring Terzic would be almost as bad as the Fonseca hire.
