After a dreadful first half, Aston Villa recovered nicely to win 2-1 in the third round of the FA Cup against West Ham. Here are the player ratings.
GK Robin Olsen, 6.0
Could not be faulted at all for Lucas Paqueta’s brilliant finish in the ninth minute.
LB Ian Maatsen, 7.0
Summed up the virtues of Aston Villa on this night by not giving up, like his teammates.
Maatsen overcame a slow start by growing into the game and showing much better awareness.
He flashed two shots at Lukasz Fabianski that threatened, with the second leading to the equalizer, and he won a  whopping six combined tackles and interceptions due to his stellar recovery pace.
CB Tyrone Mings, 4.0
What Tyrone Mings does on the football pitch can only be described as anti-football.
He has no control of his body, no passing ability, and no sense of what needs to be done to help his team improve.
Aston Villa should count themselves lucky that the West Ham attack withered and died in the second half, because Mings was so poor off the ball.
CB Ezri Konsa, 7.0
Assured defensively and nearly flawless with his passing. Unlike his center back partner, Konsa was able to get the ball moving up the pitch.
RB Matty Cash, 6.0
Worked hard for the team defensively, as per usual, to help Aston Villa cover ground in defense, and he did a good job against Mohammed Kudus, all told.
The issue is that Cash lacks the quality going forward from a technical and athletic perspective, and the right flank was almost entirely a black hole in possession.
CM Boubacar Kamara, 5.0
Although Kamara covered ground defensively, he lacked any sort of quality in possession with an awful lot of wayward passes, barely completing 80 percent of his attempts.
CM Amadou Onana, 6.0
Actually struggled on the ball upon his inclusion into the game but eventually bungled over the winner after earning a corner that should not have been given. He was also fairly good defensively.
AM Youri Tielemans, 4.0
Tielemans did anything but make plays in the attacking midfield role for Aston Villa, and the level of his end product and passing were simply shambolic.
That said, an off day from the Belgian didn’t end up proving costly to the Villains.
LW Morgan Rogers, 6.0
Morgan Rogers tried so hard to make things happen for Aston Villa after they went down in a hole early, but nothing the breakout star could do came off.
He tried turns and clever flicks, all backfired. Even simple plays proved too difficult for Rogers.
But in the end, the star attacker proved to be the match winner, burying the one clear chance he got.
ST Ollie Watkins, 7.0
A nightmare to handle off the ball but equaled by West Ham’s talented center back pairing, Watkins decided to change the game by taking matters into his own hands as provider for Rogers. What a way to step up.
RW Leon Bailey, 6.5
The only real attacking outlet for much of the game, Leon Bailey did well to create a trio of opportunities for his Aston Villa teammates, though none of them were clear cut.
You can sense that Bailey is starting to struggle with winning one-on-ones and taking advantage of transition opportunities, but he remains agile and dangerous in tight areas.
