The Bayern Munich managerial search rolls on after Austrian national team manager and Bundesliga coaching legend Ralf Rangnick rejected Die Roten in order to remain in his current position.
Although football fans around the world have poked fun at Bayern Munich for being declined by a manager who received widespread derision for his tenure at Manchester United, the situation is more complicated.
Rangnick has obligations with Austria ahead of the European Championships, where they are in the same group as France, the Netherlands, and Poland. He has enough on his plate and a tough job to see through.
Meanwhile, Rangnick was not a failure at Man United, rather the club’s hierarchy failed itself yet again and did not listen to the man they hired to change the entire club culture.
Bayern Munich don’t like to change their own club culture, but maybe that’s what is needed after they have run through another top manager. They already lost Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann, acclaimed managers, in rapid time.
According to a report from BILD, Bayern Munich are now pivoting to Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi as their new top coaching candidate to replace Thomas Tuchel, who will leave the Bavarian giants at the end of the season.
Tuchel has Bayern in the Champions League semifinals with a fighting chance at eliminating Real Madrid, but even that won’t change hearts. Enough has transpired that Bayern Munich and Tuchel do not have a future together.
De Zerbi is a great tactician but a more gentle player’s coach, which could be what the dynamic at Bayern suits, especially as they look to transition to a younger squad built for the future.
On paper, De Zerbi looks like the best manager available, since Bayern Munich appear uninterested in gambling on veteran hires with volatility like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. Zinedine Zidane remains unachievable at this juncture.
