Chelsea have been the most aggressive team on the transfer market since the Todd Boehly takeover two years ago, and although the Blues haven’t made any 100 million pound signings this summer, their aggression has remained high with some more high-profile additions.
It seems like the wings have been the main target for Chelsea, who brought in Brazilian phenom Estevao Willian early in the window, and he could go down as the best signing of the lot, given his long-term upside.
“Messinho” set Chelsea back 66 million euros, and yet the Blues still made two more expensive attacking signings besides their biggest need at the 9, inking Atletico Madrid playmaker Joao Felix for 52 million euros and then Wolves star Pedro Neto for 60 million euros.
That’s three potentially world-class wingers who favor the right-hand side for Chelsea, and yet it sounds like the Blues may not be done stockpiling top-class wide forwards this summer.
Per a report from The Athletic, Chelsea could make a late attempt at signing Manchester United star winger Jadon Sancho before the summer 2024 transfer window closes.
Sancho will not be staying with Borussia Dortmund for another season, because they did not have the nearly 50 million euros required to sign Sancho. Or, at least, BVB were unwilling to make Sancho’s second spell in Dortmund permanent, because they basically spent that fee on Maximilian Beier and Serhou Guirassy combined.
Juventus have been the most frequently linked club to Sancho and could really use a star winger to replace Federico Chiesa (and Matias Soule). But Chiesa hasn’t been sold yet, while Juve may not have enough money left over to sign both Sancho and their actual top target right now, Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.
Chelsea would probably have to pay even more than Dortmund would for Sancho as a direct Champions League rival to Manchester United, who finished behind Chelsea in the table last season but qualified for Europe on the back of a 2-1 FA Cup Final triumph over crosstown rivals Manchester City.
It seems like overkill for Chelsea to sign Sancho on top of Messinho, Neto, and Felix, but Sancho is honestly a better player than all three of them. At one point, he was arguably the best player in the Bundesliga, and he most recently helped lead Dortmund to the Champions League Final in an otherwise poor domestic campaign, especially prior to his winter return.
