Chelsea are headed for another action-packed summer transfer window as the pruning process continues at Stamford Bridge, with the club waving the white flag on several high-profile transfers since Todd Boehly’s arrival.
Overall, things have improved quite quickly under new manager Enzo Maresca, and, now, the name of the game will be signing a new striker, trimming the squad of the fat, and tweaking elsewhere.
Already, Chelsea are prepared to part ways with attacker Christopher Nkunku, who seemed like a 100 percent slam dunk at the time of his signing from RB Leipzig but has gone on to be an unmitigated disaster at Chelsea, largely due to an inability stay healthy.
Chelsea are shopping Wesley Fofana
Center back Wesley Fofana has been the same story in defense, and, now, according to a report from Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna and Sebastien Denis, the Blues are ready to throw in the towel on the former Leicester City man, too.
Because of the frequent injuries, Chelsea will reportedly shop Fofana in the summer 2025 transfer window as a loan or permanent transfer, with Ligue 1 title “contenders” Marseille said to be among the sides already intersted.
At the time of his signing for a whopping 70 million pounds in 2022, Fofana wasn’t actually seen as an expensive risk on the part of Chelsea, but rather a worthy investment and a generational talent heavily desired by Champions League winners Real Madrid.
Instead, Fofana’s injuries have plagued him, including a broken fibula and an ACL tear. Nagging injuries have derailed him along the way of the major recoveries, too, and Fofana has currently been shut down for another surgery.
Chelsea don’t have time to wait
Fofana’s story is definitely a sad one, and if he ends up leaving Chelsea, it will be solely because of the freak injuries that were out of his control. It hurts when a top club gives up on someone for this reason, but with so much competition and so little margin for error in the race for titles, you can’t entirely blame Chelsea for being ruthless.
When he did play this season, Fofana was decent and showed glimpses of the world-class potential teams saw in him in 2022, but, to be perfectly honest, there was nothing about him that stood out in comparison to his peers.
He wasn’t the best center back on the team, and while Fofana could help Chelsea in the future, it’s a big “What if?” to leave open when the Blues could part ways and use that spot in the squad on someone they can bank on to play more games. Football is cruel.
