Juventus interested in two bizarre Dusan Vlahovic backups and one overqualified option

Juventus finally look like serious Serie A title contenders in the 2024/25 season with Thiago Motta leading the way, as the manager has brought the same principles that made Bologna a Champions League side to Turin.

Star striker Dusan Vlahovic still needs to shake off his issues against the top teams, but the 24-year-old has otherwise started the season positively with five goals in seven matches.

The next task for Juventus at striker is to find a legitimate backup option for Vlahovic who can help support the team off the bench or even capably replace the Serbian international when he gets injured – and he does have an injury history.

According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are interested in Everton striker Beto, who was a standout in Serie A for Udinese before a lukewarm move to one of the Premier League’s worst teams.

Meanwhile, Corriere dello Sport reports that Juventus are interested in another experienced Everton striker in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as Juve would want to sign him on a free transfer at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Corriere also reports that Juventus have their sights set on Jonathan David as a potential free agent signing, as the Lille star did not make a move this past summer despite a bevy of interest, likely owing to Les Dogues setting too high of an asking price for a player with one year left on his contract.

David is a top striker in his prime capable of consistently scoring more than 15 goals per season, and he may actually be overqualified to be a backup to Vlahovic. But he would be more than a worthy option for the Bianconeri.

Meanwhile, Beto and Calvert-Lewin make little sense. They are big players in terms of physical size but don’t have consistent scoring records. Beto’s best scoring seasons in Serie A were 10 and 11 goals as a starter for Udinese, and that’s not quite at the level of Juve; it’s below Arkadiusz Milik and Moise Kean, if anything.

Juventus need to move past signing free agents who aren’t good enough, which is what brought them in a hole a few years ago. Calvert-Lewin qualifies as that sort of player as a 27-year-old with an injury history, making him too unreliable to be the backup for Vlahovic.
