Leicester City interested in rescurrecting former Tottenham bust

Leicester City are in the market for forwards this summer, looking to boost their attack for the remainder of the 2024/25 Premier League season in order to avoid dropping back to the Championship.

The Foxes have already secured the signing of Crystal Palace attacker Jordan Ayew, an experienced Premier League forward who can draw fouls and score the occasional goal.

According to a report from The Athletic’s Rob Tanner, Leicester City have added Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn to the list of attacking targets they are interested in for the final days of the summer 2024 transfer window.

Bergwijn has Premier League experience, as he spent a few seasons with Tottenham before returning to the Dutch Eredivisie. However, Begwijn never quite got off on the right foot for Spurs, failing to score more than three goals in any of his three seasons with the club.

However, despite being a bust for Tottenham in the Premier League, Bergwijn has shown great quality for two different Dutch powerhouses, scoring 14 goals with 12 assists for PSV in the 2018/19 season before moving to England.

Then, in his latest stint with Ajax, Bergwijn has registered 12 goals in each of the last two league seasons with an additional 9 combined assists in these two campaigns.

Bergwijn averaged 2.1 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per game last season for Ajax, standing out as one of the best wingers in the Dutch Eredivisie and showing the quality that could merit a return to the Premier League with a club with lower expectations than Tottenham.

In the prime of his career at 26, Bergwijn is, in theory, better now than he was then in his first stint in the Premier League, and that additional experience could make him a valuable rotational option for Leicester City at the right price.

Ajax are reportedly interested in making a sale on Bergwijn, so this is a move that could very well happen before the window closes. Leicester City fans may want a more ambitious target than a winger who failed at Tottenham, but Bergwijn has shown on the European stage that he can be an asset.
