Manchester United remain in shambles this season despite making a bevy of summer transfers last year, bringing in a new ownership group in INEOS, and even a new manager in the middle of the season in former Sporting CP phenom Ruben Amorim.
It’s all made no difference with Man United stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League and now even out of the FA Cup – the competition they won to spare themselves last season – after falling to Fulham on penalties.
There is still so much more work to be done for Manchester United and Amorim, and, as is usual, they are being linked to some very ambitious moves on the summer 2025 transfer market; the kinds of move they may need to make in order to go from zero to hero in an increasingly competitive Premier League.
Mike Maignan is one of the world’s best
According to a report from transfer outlet Fichajes, Manchester United have a specific player in mind to replace Andre Onana in goal amidst further unrest regarding the 28-year-old’s performances between the sticks, Mike Maignan.
The AC Milan shot-stopper has been one of the world’s best for years, making a name for himself as a Serie A champion in 2021/22 before becoming Hugo Lloris’s heir in goal for the French national team.
Maignan continues to make stunning saves for Milan despite their struggles in Serie A this season and is unquestionably one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in the world – and there is now a valid chance he leaves the Rossoneri this summer for the right offer.
Onana, meanwhile, has had his moments for Manchester United and was once one of the most highly-regarded goalkeepers in the world for Ajax and even Inter Milan in Serie A as Maignan’s rival.
But Onana’s stock has fallen under the pressure of Old Trafford, and amidst the chaos around him, his numbers have become too poor for the club to, based on these rumors, bear.
Onana has saved just 67.3 percent of the shots he’s faced in the Premier League this season and is allowing 1.44 goals per game, one season after allowing more than 1.50 goals per game for the Red Devils.
While Onana isn’t a bad keeper, Maignan is much more consistent and is capable of producing even higher highs than the fleet-footed Cameroonian sweeper. If Manchester United have a snowball’s chance in an inferno of getting their hands on the Milan man, they would obviously one thousand percent take it.
