Manchester United want one of the world’s most underrated strikers

Manchester United have made many poor attempts at filling their hole at striker over the years, and they haven’t had a truly top-class striker since Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie (briefly) ruled Old Trafford.

From Romelu Lukaku to Anthony Martial, the recent list of No. 9’s at Manchester United reads like a catalogue of the Premier League’s biggest busts.

Maybe worse yet, Man United have gone for options that never had the quality to start for them to begin with, such as former Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst.

Manchester United took a step in the right direction this past summer by signing promising Atalanta gem Rasmus Hojlund, who has recently gotten hot and shown the quality that made him a dangerous weapon in Serie A.

But Hojlund is only 21 years of age. Manchester United need an experienced striker who can consistently score goals and start in a pinch – or make a game-changing impact off the bench late in an important game.

According to a report from Relevo, Manchester United are among the big clubs in Europe monitoring Real Madrid veteran Joselu, even though the sense is that both Joselu and Madrid very much want to continue their relationship.

Manchester United are not favored to steal Joselu away from Real Madrid, and the eventual outcome is almost certainly going to be that the LaLiga veteran stays in Spain with the country’s biggest club.

However, it is sensible for Man United to throw their hats in the ring, because they can offer more money than the modest wages Joselu took to move to Real Madrid from relegated Espanyol; they can also offer more playing time.

Joselu did not excel in the Premier League at Newcastle, but he has grown into his own and gotten better with age. A 30-goal striker in the previous two seasons combined for relegation fodder Espanyol and Alaves, nobody can do more with less and few are as well-rounded as the 34-year-old.
