Newcastle failed to qualify for the Champions League with their finish in the 2023/24 Premier League season, but there is optimism the Magpies can return to Europe’s premier footballing competition if they can make the right signing or two to close the summer 2024 transfer window.
Already, Newcastle boast four of the best players in the entire Premier League in veteran center back Fabian Schar, defensive midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, and star forwards Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak.
So far this summer, Newcastle have brought in former Bournemouth center back Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer, as well as Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and Chelsea left back prospect Lewis Hall.
Still, a big splash is needed, and it appears Newcastle are pushing for another former Chelsea prospect, Marc Guehi, to be that splash while negotiating a permanent transfer with Crystal Palace.
Guehi enhanced his reputation this summer on the international stage with some strong showings for the England national team at the 2024 European Championships, and he could even displace Sven Botman, whenever he returns from an ACL tear, as the main starter next to Schar.
According to a report from the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle are getting closer towards securing the Marc Guehi transfer with the expected fee likely upwards of 60 million pounds.
That’s a massive price to pay, but Newcastle have the money with Saudi Arabia backing them and have shown with transfers like Gordon and Guimaraes that they will make a big move for the right player.
Guehi is only 24 years old but is, by all accounts, one of the best defenders in England. He is an intelligent man-marker who is rarely dribbled past, and despite his youth, the player has been a regular starter in the Premier League for three seasons now.
If Newcastle end up signing Guehi for that price, is is unlikely they will move ahead for any of the other center backs linked to them this window, as Kelly and Guehi is quite the coup to go with Botman and Schar, who were one of the best center back pairings in Europe just two seasons ago.
