The 2024/25 Premier League season is only three games young so far (with the fourth set to happen for clubs this weekend), but Tottenham star right back Pedro Porro has been making quite the impression.
Porro joined Tottenham in the winter 2023 transfer window from Sporting CP for just 45 million euros when combining the initial loan fee and the lump sum to make his deal permanent.
He was no secret at that point, though, as Tottenham were smart enough to pounce on the right back and win the battle to sign him amidst interest from other top clubs in European football, including Real Madrid.
Porro quickly replaced Emerson Royal and proved to be a massive upgrade on the current AC Milan man, firmly establishing himself as one of the best right backs in English football.
Liverpool superstar Trent Alexander-Arnold is widely viewed as the best right back in English football, and despite the excellence of Reece James and even Malo Gusto at Chelsea, TAA’s status as the standard right back in England has not changed.
However, to start the 2024/25 season, Pedro Porro has the best WhoScored rating at 7.34, beating out Trent by more than two decimal points with some more scintillating all-around displays.
Porro has been “money” as a creator with two key passes per game. He’s also averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, and 1.7 fouls drawn per game. Quite the symmetry, huh?
Tottenham have a brilliant talent on their hands, and at the age of 25, Porro, a Spanish international, is making quite the name for himself, even if he is overshadowed by Dani Carvajal in his home country and by Alexander-Arnold in England.
Right now in the 2024/25 season, Porro has been better than both. Tottenham have quite a few top players in their starting lineup, but more attention should be given to Porro, whose all-around quality at right back may actually cause him to be underrated. He’s easy to overlook – but Spurs fans know his quality.
