In addition to listing the transfers, we will have each move graded with an analysis of the details. So check back here every so often throughout the summer 2023 transfer window for the lowdown on what’s happening in the world of Serie A.

All statistics are from WhoScored.com unless otherwise noted and all known transfer details are written in boldface print for your convenience. Transfers are written in chronological order with the most recent moves at the top of the page.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek to AC Milan

Part of the Chelsea summer firesale so that the club can clear out important financial and squad space to make further moves that bolster a squad that failed to qualify for Europe in 2023/24, Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be heading to AC Milan in a transfer worth 16 million euros plus four million in add-ons, per Fabrizio Romano.

Loftus-Cheek was pretty much only linked to Milan since the summer transfer window began, so it is no surprise to see that the England international is making his way to the Rossoneri. He joins Milan not long after the club controversial pushed Sandro Tonali out in a mega-deal worth upwards of 70 million euros.

While Loftus-Cheek is a quality footballer and has experience, if you compare him to the other midfielders starting for clubs competing in the top four of Serie A, he simply isn’t on their level in terms of quality. For 20 million euros, Milan could have found better value.

Grade: C-, Not a terrible deal, but further evidence that Milan’s future is shaky without Paolo Maldini.

Marcus Thuram to Inter Milan

It seemed like AC Milan would be securing the services of the best free-agent striker available in Marcus Thuram, but Inter Milan swooped in at the last second to sign the former Borussia Mönchengladbach – and EA Guingamp – standout.

Thuram has a pedigree in Serie A, as his father Lilian is one of the best defenders to have ever played in the league. (And yet Juventus showed essentially zero interest in him.)

A well-rounded forward who is arguably more adept at creating chances than scoring them, Thuram showed on the global stage in the 2020/21 Champions League vs. Real Madrid that he can shine against any level of competition. Thuram is only 25 years old and still has upside to grow. He is an ideal replacement for Edin Džeko in an Inter attack that relies heavily on the all-around qualities of its world-class strikers.

Grade: A, The fact that they signed him for free over their crosstown rivals makes this deal even sweeter.

Timothy Weah to Juventus

Timothy Weah has a world of potential, though he hasn’t quite shown it for Lille. Last season, Weah did not score any goals across 1,718 minutes in Ligue 1, assisting just twice. That said, there were some matches where he looked nearly unplayable, flashing raw talent that Lille could have made more of.

Juventus will hope that they can get the most out of the versatile 23-year-old. The USMNT star is a bit of a gamble at a reported 12 million euros, per Fabrizio Romano, but in comparison to previous investments the Bianconeri have made on the market, it’s a rather small fee.

Weah is the kind of signing Juve have to make because of their financial predicament. They need to roll the dice on young attackers with high upside, because they can’t really afford splashes like Federico Chiesa and Dušan Vlahović.

Grade: B-, Not a proven player but a flier worth taking.

Evan N’Dicka to Roma

Roma knew they needed to reinforce the squad after their lack of depth cost them a true fight for the top four in Serie A and effectively doomed them in the Europa League Final vs. Sevilla. Any José Mourinho side is built on a strong defense, and he has one of the best center backs in the league at his disposal in Chris Smalling.

The Giallorossi will hope that free-agent signing Evan N’Dicka will be just as good. That’s a high threshold to reach, but N’Dicka was a sensation as a young player for the 2018/19 Eintracht Frankfurt side that made it to the Europa League Final, and then the Frenchman helped the team with the competition just a couple of years later.

N’Dicka is great with the ball at his feet and has all the raw tools to be a top player. You’d bet on him finding his best form under Mourinho’s guidance.

Grade: A, An excellent signing for Roma in every respect.

Houssem Aouar to Roma

Because Houssem Aouar has been so inconsistent and has failed to improve since being one of the more coveted midfielders in the 2020 summer transfer window (Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Juventus were all linked), the former Lyon man is a bit of a risk for Roma. However, he is a free transfer and is still only 24 years old.

Aouar likely just needs a change of scenery and a much better manager. Lyon’s revolving door of coaches clearly didn’t help Aouar or the team, which underperformed in every season. Mourinho is one of the best managers ever. A disciplinarian with experience working with young, mercurial talents may be the proverbial kick in the pants that the talented French midfielder needs.

There is no questioning what Aouar can do when progressing play with the ball at his feet. His pure talent is exceptional. And Roma need that kind of dribbling quality in the middle of the park to truly compete with the teams at the top of the Serie A table in 2023/24. Paulo Dybala will be grateful.

Grade: A, Another excellent free-agent pick-up by a Roma side that seems serious about improving with Mourinho as their manager.
