Brighton have made waves this transfer window by signing some of the most exciting wonderkids on the market.  The Seagulls have swooped up Newcastle’s Yankuba Minteh, Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer, Nordsjælland’s Ibrahim Osman, and Amario Cozier-Duberry from Arsenal.  As exciting as these signings have been, Brighton fans have been begging their club to sign some defenders, especially right backs. To their credit, the Seagulls have been listening.  Brighton have been linked to a number of strong right backs, including Turkey and Fenerbahçe star Ferdi Kadıoğlu and Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters. Brighton’s interest in Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez has officially gone from a tenuous transfer rumor to a full-on potential signing.  The 21-year-old midfielder revealed this week that he, his agent, and Miami are in discussions about a move to Brighton this summer.  “My agent is speaking to Inter Miami and Brighton & Hove Albion,” Gomez said to Spanish broadcaster Deporte Total USA after Inter Miami’s 3-1 win against Toronto,  “I came here to make the jump to Europe. I hope it happens and whatever God wants.” Gomez has been one of the best defensive midfielders in MLS since joining Messi’s team last summer. Brighton have a reputation for plucking wonderkids seemingly out of nowhere. However, this latest transfer rumor seems odd even for the Seagulls.  According to multiple outlets in Colombia and Mexico, Brighton are still interested in signing Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier. He could cost as little as €8m. Tottenham have also been linked to the 24-year-old Colombian. The Seagulls were linked to Mier back in January, but it was never clear whether that was just paper talk or a legit transfer rumor. Even though the 2024 transfer window does not close for another month and a half, Brighton have already spent almost €100m on players this summer. Only Aston Villa have spent more than the Seagulls.  This is a sign of Brighton owner Tony Bloom’s ambitious plan to make Brighton regular contenders for European football. However, it has to be said that most of Brighton’s signings have been on young players with big upside and not proven players who will help them qualify for Europe this season.  If the Seagulls really want to establish themselves as Premier League powerhouses, they will have to spend on proven players.
