The 10 most legendary defenders in Inter Milan history

In the illustrious annals of Inter Milan’s storied legacy, certain players have etched their names in the club’s history books through their unparalleled defensive prowess, unwavering commitment, and sheer determination on the pitch.

From the iconic figures who adorned the Nerazzurri jersey during the golden eras of Italian football to the modern stalwarts like Alessandro Bastoni who continue to uphold the club’s defensive traditions, Inter has been graced with an exceptional array of defensive talent.

These defenders not only epitomize resilience and fortitude, but also embody the essence of Inter’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

Let us embark on a journey through the corridors of time to celebrate the 10 greatest Inter Milan defenders to have ever graced the hallowed turf of the Giuseppe Meazza.

Javier Zanetti

Javier Zanetti isn’t just one of the best defenders in the history of Inter Milan. He isn’t even just one of the best defenders of his generation. Zanetti is an all-timer at any position and one of the biggest counterweights to the world’s best attackers the Nerazzurri could have ever asked for.

Thanks to Zanetti and his teammates, Inter became the only team in the history of Italian football to win the treble, doing so in the 2009/10 season under Jose Mourinho by vanquishing the Bayern Munich dynasty in the final.

Zanetti won silverware throughout his time at the Giuseppe Meazza, picking up five straight Scudetti from 2006 to 2010 with four Coppa Italia titles and still four more Supercups.

Capable of starting as a fullback or center back, Zanetti was a jack of all trades who actually began his career as an attacking winger before becoming a midfielder and defender. Basically, Zanetti was a footballer who could make a difference anywhere.

From 1995 to 2014, Zanetti wrote an undeniably legacy with Inter Milan, eventually going on to become the vice president of the historic Serie A club.

A member of the The Guardian’s Serie A Team of the 90’s, Zanetti was legitimately elite in three different decades, making it to the UEFA Team of the Year five times in his illustrious career.

Giacinto Facchetti

Gaicinto Facchetti is one of the OG Inter Milan greats, as he made 476 appearances for the club from 1960 to 1978, making his presence felt as a man who would be remembered as one of the greatest left backs in the history of Italian football.

He won the Serie A title four times and the Coppa Italia once, captaining Inter Milan to glory as an elite two-way presence on the offensive and defensive ends.

Facchetti was even the second-place Ballon d’Or finisher in 1965 behind Portuguese icon Eusebio, and he would be named by Brazilian legend Pele as one of the 125 greatest living footballers back in 2004 when the list was announced.

An elite athlete and leader for the Nerazzurri, Facchetti began his career as an attacking fullback on the wings before transitioning into a libero role, reading the defense expertly as a top technician at the back.

Giuseppe Bergomi

Italy have a long list of world-class defenders to have come from the football-obsessed nation, as Giuseppe Bergomi has a seat at the table with any of the elite defenders who are more frequently discussed at dinner conversations about the beautiful game.

Bergomi made Inter his club from 1979 to 1999, spending a good 20 years with the Nerazzurri, winning the Coppa Italia, Supercup, and Serie A once each during his tenure with the club.

He was also a part of the Italian national team that won the World Cup in 1982 and finished third place in 1990, showing quality at the international level as one of the best right backs on the planet.

Bergomi could play any position at a world-class level, specializing in his ability to take attackers out of the game with his tight man-marking or even tighter challenges that left attackers rolling on the turf in pain.

Lucio

Lucio isn’t talked about enough next to the Sergio Ramoses, Paolo Maldinis, and Franco Baresis of the world – not to invoke only AC Milan legends at center back – but the Brazilian icon is legitimately one of the best center backs ever. He is as brilliant as any of those aforementioned players.

An Inter Milan star from 2009 to 2012, Lucio is actually more well-known for his years with Bayern Munich and then Bayer Leverkusen before that.

It is no coincidence that Lucio was a key part of the Leverkusen side that made it to the Champions League Final against Real Madrid in 2002, nor is it a coincidence that his first year with Inter Milan in 2009 was the year they won the Champions League over his former club Bayern.

Lucio needed only three seasons in Milano to become an Inter icon, winning the treble and then the Coppa Italia and Supercup together one season later. He was in the World XI for the first and only time in his career in 2010 despite being a Bundesliga Team of the Season standout in six straight seasons.

One of the most intelligent defenders and one of the best man-markers to ever play the game, Lucio brought a level of security, technical class, and leadership to the Inter defense that has still never quite been replicated. He was indeed a “Horse” on the pitch with his intensity.

Armando Picchi

The captain of “La Grande Inter”, Armando Picchi is one of the most iconic and influential players of the 1960s, starring as a libero for Inter Milan from 1960 to 1967.

One of the best Inter defenders ever, Picchi earned over 200 league caps for the Nerazzurri, taking home Scudetto honors three times and then the European Cup twice, with all of the Italian Football Hall of Famer’s trophies coming with Inter.

Picchi began his career as an attacking player and then a midfielder before really coming into his own as a Libero, utilizing his exploits in his former positions to become a star “quarterback” out of the defense with his attack-starting passing as a Libero.

Marco Materazzi

Most infamous for the words he uttered to Zinedine Zidane that led to the headbutt heard ’round the world and a resounding Worl Cup triumph for Italy, Marco Materazzi was also a menace in Serie A for Inter Milan.

Whether or not people want to admit it, Materazzi is one of the greatest defenders of his era and certainly one of the best defenders in the storied history of Inter Milan.

Materazzi earned the nickname “Matrix” during his time in Milano, as he was a major asset in the attack despite being an absolute pest for opposition forwards. He was a threat to score from a set piece at any given moment and had elite ball-playing capabilities out of the back.

One of the scariest footballers to contend with as an opponent, Materazzi was that much more valuable to Inter Milan because he struck fear in the hearts of the opposition.

Maicon

One of the best technical players to don the Inter Milan kit during the 2000s and 2010s, Maicon was arguably the best right back in the world alongside countryman Dani Alves of Barcelona, whom he knocked out, and an integral part of the 2009/10 Champions League-winning Inter side.

Maicon played for Inter from 2006 to 2012 after being an inspired signing from Monaco, taking his game to new heights in Serie A and thriving under the legendary Jose Mourinho.

The Brazilian superstar won the Scudetto four straight times to begin his Inter career, scoring six goals with ten assists in the last of those seasons when Inter Milan won the treble in 2009/10. That stat line is one of the best by a right back in Serie A history.

Solid in defense, Maicon was nicknamed “The Colossus” by the Inter faithful and is one of the best attacking fullbacks – if not THE best – to grace the pitch for Inter Milan.

Giuseppe Baresi

Everyone knows about AC Milan legend Franco Baresi, but they should also know about former Inter Milan center back Giuseppe Baresi, who was a Calcio legend in his own right.

Giuseppe Baresi played for Inter Milan from 1976 to 1992, spanning decades and making nearly 400 Serie A appearances for one of Italy’s three most iconic clubs.

He won Serie A and the Coppa Italia twice each, and Baresi was also a part of the Inter Milan side that won the 1990/91 UEFA Cup. Baresi was a great center back, fullback, and defensive midfielder during his tenure with the club.

Walter Samuel

Walter Samuel rounds out that legendary Maicon, Javier Zanetti, and Lucio back line that led Inter Milan to the treble in 2009/10, protecting world-class goalkeeper Julio Cesar’s goal with absolute class.

The Argentinian international may have been overshadowed a bit by countryman Javier Zanetti and his “rival” Brazilian duo, but Samuel was as tenacious as any of them and received plenty of plaudits from contemporary analysts as one of the best center backs of his generation.

Samuel was also part of five consecutive Scudetto-winning Inter sides in the 2000s before capping things off with the treble, winning a trio of Italian cups and four more Suppercoppe for the Nerazzurri. Furthermore, Samuel himself was a three-time World XI player during his time with Inter Milan.

Nicknamed “The Wall” by the Inter faithful, a more fitting nickname could not be used to describe Samuel, whose tenacity and football IQ were only matched by teammates Zannetti and Lucio at the time.

Riccardo Ferri

Riccardo Ferri is one of the best defenders in Inter Milan history, even if he is overshadowed and doesn’t receive as many plaudits as the others on this list.

The Crema-born center back made nearly 300 Serie A appearances for Inter Milan from 1981 to 1994 before rounding out the final years of his illustrious career with another historic Italian club in Sampdoria.

Thanks to Ferri’s contributions, the Nerazzurri took home Scudetto honors in 1988/89, and they would win the UEFA Cup twice in the 90’s before he moved on to Samp.

Ferri was part of the Italian side that came third in the heartbreaking 1990 World Cup, and he was Inter’s Player of the Season just two years before that.
