Robert Lewandowski’s mind-boggling wages could make things awkward for Barcelona

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski played a crucial role in the Blaugrana winning the LaLiga title last season, and despite criticisms due to another mid-season slump, the former Bayern Munich star has remained a key player for Barca in 2023/24.

The Blaugrana have officially lost the league title to Real Madrid and suffered yet another Champions League humiliation, leaving many Culers speculating about the futures of the majority of the squad.

Only elite young talents like Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Gavi appear to be untouchable, meaning stars like Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong could be ripe for the picking on the transfer market.

Although Lewandowski is less of an easy target for criticism than de Jong because of the concessions he has made to stay with the club, the reality is that he is also a highly-paid player.

Unlike de Jong, Lewandowski isn’t a young player either, and some Barcelona fans are wondering if the push to win the league last season was worth the 45 million euro transfer fee and wage investment in a player who is now 35.

On the subject of those wages, Cadena SER have released the figures, stating Robert Lewandowski is slated to make a whopping 32 million euros gross in salary next season.

His net salary will obviously be significantly less, but that is still a hefty wage total for Barcelona, as the Blaugrana are still working their way out of a serious financial crisis that has hamstrung their ability to sign top talents.

Barcelona could use the money they have invested in Lewandowski’s total transfer fee and wages to sign two star forwards, such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and a quality striker.

Lewandowski is Barcelona’s clear goal threat and best forward with 17 goals and 8 assists. The well-rounded Polish legend is the least of Barca’s problems, yet from an overall squad-building perspective, it’s fair to wonder if the 2024/25 season will be the point where it becomes obvious that the deal was not worth it.
