Aston Villa have made a few ambitious signings in the summer 2024 transfer window, with the crown jewel of Unai Emery’s incoming class being center midfielder Amadou Onana.
Ian Maatsen was also a notable addition, joining Aston Villa permanently from Chelsea after a strong season on loan with Borussia Dortmund, where he reached the Champions League Final.
Although Aston Villa have secured a talented new left back, the club are still in the market for a right back upgrade on Matty Cash, but that now appears to be their priority before the transfer window closes on Aug. 30.
According to a report from The Mirror, Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida has now become the top transfer target for Aston Villa, as he is the focus of Unai Emery before the transfer shop officially shuts down until the winter.
Geertruida has been linked to a number of clubs around England and Europe as a whole, with many surprised that Arne Slot, Feyenoord’s former coach, hasn’t gone harder after the right back for Liverpool.
Plus last summer, Borussia Dortmund were very keen on signing Geertruida, and they could still benefit from the incredibly talented and versatile two-way right back.
Capable of playing as a center back or even a defensive midfielder, Geertruida put up some astonishing numbers for Feyenoord last season with 8 goals, 5 assists, and 2.3 combined tackles and interceptions per game.
One of the best pure defensive players in the Dutch Eredivisie, Geertruida only allowed 0.3 dribbles completed per match despite also being a regular source of goals and creativity for Slot’s side.
Feyenoord won’t set a cheap asking price for Geertruida, but any reasonable fee would be worth it for Aston Villa. Geertruida has been excellent in the Netherlands for three seasons now. He is still only 24 and, scarily enough, can only get even better from here on out.
