Tottenham are making a play for their ideal backup CB

Tottenham have one of the best center back groups on paper in all of world football. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are two athletic monsters who win possession, progress play, and even contribute to goals.

Almost every team in Europe envies the duo of Romero and Van de Ven, because they are young, consistent, and energetic with only potentially injury risk as significant negatives to their name.

Behind them, Tottenham have another young star in central defense, Radu Dragusin. The former Juventus prospect has stepped up big time in recent matches amidst injury, and he would be a starter for the majority of teams in Europe’s top five leagues.

Despite not even having enough minutes to go around for Dragusin, Tottenham are still evidently in the market for another significant center back signing to make themselves four deep in one of world football’s most important positions.

According to TBR Football’s Billy Meyers, Tottenham are now one of the big Premier League clubs showing an interest in impending summer 2025 free agent Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen.

Tottenham have reportedly begun talks with Tah, who could be signed to a pre-contract agreement in January in preparation for a June transfer. Tah, of course, has been most closely linked with a move to Bayern Munich, who would have likely signed the 28-year-old German international if it weren’t for a bizarre spat between Leverkusen and Munich executives.

That said, Tah is still expected to move to Bayern next summer as an experienced hand to back up, presumably, the riskier duo of Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano, who should, in theory, be the best center back partnership in Europe when at their best.

Tottenham are worthwhile spoilers, though. Tah may not necessarily appeal to the idea of being a backup for Tottenham when he could get more minutes for a bigger club that competes for Champions League titles in Bayern, but you never know how much the Bavarians are truly interested in him.

If they pull out of the race or get stingy, Tottenham could swoop in for a true leader at the back and one of the most accurate passers of the football in the world from the center back position.

Tah isn’t a slam-dunk, world-class central defender, but all Tottenham want is a steady, reliable veteran who can pass the ball and be a more disciplined, covering counterweight to Spurs’ young and hungry trio of center backs.

The fact that Tah is also a free transfer undoubtedly appeals to Spurs, too. Their chances of signing the German defender are admittedly low, but they should be considered legitimate contenders in the race.
