Tottenham may have just finagled their way to a serious transfer steal

According to a report from Daily Mail (h/t @HotspurRelated), Tottenham Hotspur have pulled off remarkable transfer heist for the 2024-25 season, as they aim to bolster their squad in a bid to finish in the top four and possibly challenge for the Premier League.

On Tuesday, Tottenham officially announced that they had extended German forward Timo Werner’s loan deal for the upcoming season. “We are delighted to announce an agreement for Timo Werner to rejoin us on loan from RB Leipzig for the 2024/25 season, with an option to make the deal permanent,” Spurs stated in the official announcement on their website.

Spurs have carried out some shrewd transfer business in recent seasons. Last season, they signed Dutch defender Micky van de Ven for around €50 million from Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg. Van de Ven was nominated as the Spurs’ Player of the Season for his stellar contributions in defence.

In January earlier this year, the Lilywhites signed Werner on a short-term loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the deal permanent.

According to multiple English outlets, the initial agreement included a £15 million permanent purchase option. The new agreement, though, includes a £8.5 million signing option at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. In hindsight, if Spurs do end up making the deal permanent, it could prove to be one of the biggest transfer steals in recent memory.

That is obviously considering the possibility of Werner remaining fit and ending up making a big impact. The 28-year-old scored two goals and assisted a further three in his 13 Premier League appearances.

He managed to show glimpses of his talent, but never really took his opportunities by the scruff of their necks. An untimely hamstring injury in early May drew curtains on his season.

Werner, on his day, has the ability to tear apart defences on his own. But it is his tendency to be extremely inconsistent which has somewhat put him on a declining trajectory. Once touted as one of the most talented young forwards in the world, it must be admitted that he has failed to reach his potential.

Two middling seasons with Chelsea and a not-so-fruitful return to Leipzig saw his stocks fall down overwhelmingly. Under Ange Postecoglou, though, we might yet see the revival of a once promising and brazen forward.
