Tottenham leading other Premier League clubs in battle for breakout CB

Tottenham have been loading up on center backs in response to woeful defensive performances in the 2022/23 season, in which Spurs squandered a brilliant campaign from Harry Kane and didn’t even qualify for the Champions League.

The defensive upgrades have paid off. Micky van de Ven has been excellent since joining this summer, and winter signing Radu Dragusin from Genoa looks like a quality defender, too.

Tottenham aren’t going to stop there, though. Lately, the North London-based outfit have been showing considerable interest in Serie A star Alessandro Buongiorno, who has been one of the biggest breakout stars at the position in Europe.

Chelsea, Newcastle, and other Premier League sides have been linked to the Torino star, as Buongiorno could follow in the footsteps of current Juventus standout Gleison Bremer as the next world-class defender to come from the club.

According to a report from Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Tottenham are the ones leading the race to sign Alessandro Buongiorno this summer.

Spurs have reportedly been scouting the 24-year-old for months and are again sending scouts to get a close look at the Italian defender when Torino take on Serie A champions Inter Milan.

Buongiorno will be tested by Inter’s elite striker group, but he has passed so many tests this season. He is averaging 2.5 tackles and 2.4 interceptions per game this season while allowing a meager 0.4 dribbles completed per match.

Right now, Buongiorno is the favorite to be Serie A Defender of the Year over stars at top clubs like Alessandro Bastoni of Inter and even Bremer. At an expected price of around 40 million euros, Buongiorno could be another center back steal for Tottenham.
