Tottenham trying hard to bring a high-profile transfer flop back to the Premier League

Tottenham just saw one of their best midfielders, Rodrigo Bentancur, go down with what seemed like a serious injury in the early minutes of their eventual 1-0 League Cup triumph over Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Spurs have a few quality pieces in midfield in converted winger Dejan Kulusevski, young prospects Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, rising star Pape Sarr, and box-to-box worker Yves Bissouma.

But there’s a general feeling that in order to get back to the Champions League level, Tottenham need to make a big splash in the midfield by signing someone who can both defend and make plays.

According to a report from Diario AS in Spain, Tottenham, as well as Fulham, are pushing harder than any other clubs in the Premier League to bring Douglas Luiz back to English football.

Douglas Luiz joined Serie A powerhouse Juventus from Aston Villa this past summer transfer window in a swap deal that turned out to be a dud for both teams, with Luiz arguably being the biggest loser of the deal from a professional standpoint.

The Brazilian international was a star in the Premier League for Villa and on the radar of clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona, and now at Juventus, he can scarcely get a game for a team that isn’t even in the top four of the league standings.

Luiz doesn’t seem to fit Serie A, and while he reportedly doesn’t want to leave Juve, with how poorly he has been playing and how little the team seems to want to do with him in the lineup, perhaps he can be convinced otherwise by Tottenham or Fulham.

Tottenham could use Luiz, who has goal-scoring upside and is a fully capable ball-winner in midfield. On the terms of a low-risk loan deal for the remainder of the season, Luiz could be a strong candidate to bolster the squad for the remainder of the 2024/25 season – and potentially beyond if both player and club like the arrangement.
