Inter Milan are in a much tougher battle for the Scudetto this season after winning Serie A by nearly 20 points last year, and their main threat looks like an Antonio Conte-led Napoli.
The legendary Italian manager, who returned Inter to Scudetto prominence in the 2020/21 season, is back working with Romelu Lukaku in Naples and spearheading a team that landed the best defender in Serie A this past summer, Alessandro Buongiorno.
Napoli’s other crucial players include their MVP when they won the title in 2022/23, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and underrated midfield metronome Stanislav Lobotka.
But another unsung hero is goalkeeper Alex Meret, who has established himself as one of the best pure shot-stoppers in the Italian top flight over the last couple of seasons.
Napoli, however, are at risk of losing Meret this winter, and Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli reports that Inter Milan are interested in making a move for the 27-year-old goalkeeper while he is in his prime.
Meret’s contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season, and despite more than a year of negotiations, Napoli, once again, have been unable to reach an agreement with one of their stars players – a familiar setting that the likes of Victor Osimhen have been in.
Inter Milan already have the best goalkeeper in Serie A in Yann Sommer, who has been beyond brilliant since arriving from Bayern Munich in 2023. But Sommer is 2023, and the former free agent acquisition will need to be replaced in the coming years.
Meret can be the next man up. Inter already poached a star from Napoli for free this past summer in midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who has been quite the X-Factor in the rotation of what is, by far, the best midfield in Italian football right now.
Signing a top goalkeeper under the age of 30 for free from a Serie A title rival would be a massive deal for Inter, and as the weeks pass by, Napoli seem more resigned to having to let Meret walk for nothing.
