Manchester United will need to make some tough calls in the summer transfer window when it comes to players they are going to sell, because if they want to sign actual impact talent, they need to raise the funds and clear squad space.
Marcus Rashford has been viewed as untouchable by Manchester United over the years, because he is a homegrown talent and one of the most gifted footballers in England.
When he is at his best, Rashford is one of the elite players in the Premier League. He has scored 17 goals in two different league seasons, including in the 2022/23 campaign.
However, Rashford is frustratingly inconsistent, and he has been especially frustrating in the 2023/24 season, often going invisible in important matches.
There has been speculation that with INEOS taking charge of Manchester United, 2024 could be the year that the Red Devils finally decide to cut Marcus Rashford loose.
ESPN’s Mark Ogden reports that this likely won’t be the case. Even though Rashford’s future is “in doubt” from within the club, he has generated “little interest” on the transfer market.
Even PSG don’t seem to want him, as they reportedly favor AC Milan star Rafael Leao as Kylian Mbappe’s replacement on the left wing this summer.
Rashford makes 300,000 pounds per week, which means he is one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League. With just 7 goals and 2 assists in 31 league appearances this season and minimal creative output, Rashford is clearly underperforming his wages.
Manchester United may be more willing than ever before to let the 26-year-old revive his career somewhere else, but the reality is that Rashford may stay because of reasons beyond United’s control.
The Red Devils may want to sell Rashford, but other clubs may not be interested in paying a transfer fee plus 300,000 pounds per week in wages to a player barely capable of scoring 10 goals in a season despite having a team built around him.
