After weeks of speculation that an about-face could be coming, Fabrizio Romano and other top reporters are saying Xavi will stay at Barcelona after all.
The news comes as a disappointment to many Culers, because any goodwill Xavi was building up was promptly squandered by an embarrassing Champions League collapse – Barca’s latest – to PSG in the quarterfinals. Barcelona lost 4-1 in the second leg at home to blow a 3-2 lead from the first leg.
Xavi, however, will stay, and now Culers will be left wondering what’s next for the squad and the coaching staff. Regardless of what Barcelona decided at manager, fans know the team needs to be better in 2024/25, otherwise more disappointment in the Champions League and LaLiga will be forthcoming.
According to veteran reporter Xavi Lemus, Barcelona told Xavi that they are “optimistic” about recovering the “1-1” rule, meaning they can spend one euro for every one euro they bring in, as opposed to the “1-4” rule implemented under sanctions in which they could only spend one euro for every four they generated.
Doing so would enable Barcelona to make the necessary upgrades to their squad, though, the “1-1” rule also means the Blaugrana will have to sell key figures like Frenkie de Jong in order to make those upgrades.
Talk is cheap. Xavi is signing on in the hopes Barcelona will be right and provide him with the support he needs on the transfer market, but after years of mediocre free agent signings, Barca have to back up those words with new sporting director Deco.
