Chelsea are pushing hard to sign Victor Osimhen, the best available striker on the summer 2024 transfer market and a massive upgrade over the options the Blues currently have up top.
Although summer 2023 signing Nicolas Jackson has recently shown signs that he can be a valuable player to Chelsea, it appears the club still wants a truly elite, out-and-out No. 9. The 2022/23 Capocannoniere fits the bill on paper.
Chelsea aren’t the only big club going for Osimhen this summer. PSG are highly interested in adding a superstar forward with Kylian Mbappe set to join Real Madrid, while Arsenal are just as keen on adding a true No. 9.
The Blues’ chief rivals in the Premier League and in this Osimhen transfer battle, Arsenal do have a competent 9 in Gabriel Jesus and a potentially elite one in former Chelsea man Kai Havertz, who has been beyond brilliant at striker in recent weeks as a first-year Gunner.
That said, Arsenal, like Chelsea, want a true presence up top, and Osimhen fits the bill as a possible 30-goal striker who has the physicality to dominate the heart of the box.
According to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, both Chelsea and Arsenal have a clear advantage over PSG, because Osimhen is more interested in joining a club in the Premier League than going back to Ligue 1, where he played for Lille.
Between the two London powerhouse clubs, Chelsea appear to have an additional advantage, because Di Marzio says that Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna wants Romelu Lukaku in a transfer for Victor Osimhen.
Lukaku and a cash offer has been thrown around for months as a possible solution to sign Osimhen and lower the striker’s price. Osimhen has a 130 million euro release clause.
Although Lukaku has struggled this season for Roma, he was great for Inter Milan in 2022/23 and before that in his first stint in 2020/21 when he won Serie A MVP and the league title.
He could be a major asset for Napoli and is a better option than the players Arsenal would be willing to part ways with in order to get a deal done with the Partenopei for Osimhen.
