Brighton aren’t far away from returning to European football next season, as they are just five points back of Bournemouth in seventh, occupying the Conference League place in the Premier League table.
They have assembled a great deal of young attacking talent, including two of the most underrated young stars in European football in Yankuba Minteh and Joao Pedro.
But Brighton could use some more defensive reinforcements, which is why some fans are a little peeved that the Seagulls are mostly linked to attacking names on the January 2025 transfer market.
However, according to a report from Sky Sports, Brighton are also among the teams watching Southampton right back Kyle-Walker Peters, who is in his very last negotiations with the Saints for a new contract.
Walker-Peters is one of the more established right backs in the Premier League but has just six months on his contract, and with Southampton still not making headway on a new deal despite at least six months of talks, it’s looking increasingly like “KWP” will be headed elsewhere
He could wait to sign somewhere for free in the summer, a pre-agreement in the winter for a summer move, or he could help Southampton facilitate an immediate transfer for a small fee.
No matter how you slice it, Walker-Peters is an above-average player at a premium position who can be had for a bargain fee, and, when it comes to cost, there isn’t a better player for a right back-needy team in the Premier League to sign.
Brighton have Joel Veltman, but they would be wise to keep Walker-Peters on their list of right back transfer targets, either in January or June, but they may have to make a move this month if they really want him since other European hopefuls like Aston Villa will be hot on the 27-year-old’s heels.
