The 25 Best Players in La Liga Right Now, Ranked

La Liga has no shortage of superstars in 2026/27. From the three-headed monster at Real Madrid to Barcelona’s seemingly endless collection of elite young talent, the league remains home to some of the most gifted footballers anywhere in the world.

But this isn’t a ranking of the most famous players, the players with the biggest transfer values, or the players with the best careers.

This is about who the best players in La Liga are right now.

Current ability matters most. So does recent form, consistency, importance to their team, and the simple question of how much of a difference they make when they’re at their best. That means established legends still have their place, rising stars can force their way into the conversation, and some massive names have been left surprisingly low.

With that in mind, here are the 25 best players in La Liga right now, ranked.

25. Jan Oblak — Atlético Madrid

Jan Oblak has been the starting goalkeeper at Atletico Madrid for almost a decade, and he has always been recognized as one of the elite shot stoppers in Spanish football with 11 seasons boasting a save percentage above 70.

A consistent performer year over year, Oblak is a better shot stopper than he is with the ball at his feet, and because he hasn’t been saving around 80 percent of the shots he faces like he used to, he can’t be any higher than 25th. But he remains one of the most effective goalkeepers in Spanish football due to his experience and ability to occasionally pull out the truly spectacular save.

24. Álex Baena — Atlético Madrid

Alex Baena recorded 23 assists in two seasons before moving from Villarreal to an even bigger Spanish giant in Atletico Madrid, and he is one of the best pure chance creators in the world. He is a rare talent who can pass into the center from wide positions, making his through balls and slipped passes especially dangerous.

At Atletico Madrid, Baena has to split wide more, and in a more defensive system, he has to be even sharper with his passing on the counterattack. Now 25 years of age, Baena is entering the prime of his career, and while he isn’t coming off his best season, he makes it in over some of the Barcelona and Real Madrid standouts because of his raw chance creation numbers over the years in La Liga. Plus, he was a national team starter for Spain at the World Cup.

23. Gerard Moreno — Villarreal

Gerard Moreno is one of the most intelligent strikers in the world and has been an elite finisher with jaw dropping technique for years. He didn’t have a single assist last season and hasn’t been an assist juggernaut for the Yellow Submarine like he was a handful of years ago in his prime, but he is still one of the better all around strikers in Spanish football and fully capable of thriving in a deeper role.

Because he doesn’t play for one of the Big Three clubs in La Liga, Moreno is still highly underrated outside of Spain, and at 34 years of age, he can’t be any higher than 23rd.

22. Aymeric Laporte — Athletic Club

Aymeric Laporte made his triumphant return to Athletic Club and La Liga last season after starring with Cristiano Ronaldo on Al Nassr, and he has not missed a beat in resuming his status as one of the best center backs in La Liga.

There are very few players in world football who are as good at controlling the game as a center back, and he is one of the top five best ball playing center backs in the world, which he showed at the World Cup.

Athletic Club thrive on having veteran leaders at the back end of the defense, and that is exactly who Laporte is. He is composed, he does not step into rash challenges, and he knows how to do more than less.

But he just can’t make the top 20 because he isn’t as big of a difference maker as the other players who rank higher on this list of the best La Liga players.

21. Antony — Real Betis

Antony was totally listless at Manchester United after being a highly promising prospect at Ajax and one of the best young wingers in world football. His loan to Real Betis resurrected his career, and not only has he been more confident and free in La Liga, but he has also been much more decisive with less wasted movements on the ball.

While Manchester United fans know Antony as someone who totally lacked end product and couldn’t hit a barn door, much less register an assist, he has been the total opposite in Seville with 13 goals in 45 starts on the wing since joining the Verdiblancos.

Real Betis have a handful of quality players in their attack, but Antony is their most important player due to his athleticism, explosiveness, and ability to conjure magic. He makes it above Gerard Moreno, Alex Baena, Alexander Sorloth, and other notable La Liga players because he’s been more productive all around.

20. Trent Alexander-Arnold — Real Madrid

Trent Alexnder-Arnold isn’t your average right back with his passing quality and ability to read the game on the ball like a midfielder, and he is by far the best passer and most creative player of any defender in the world.

His role at Real Madrid may evolve under Jose Mourinho, but expect him to play further up the pitch and even tuck inside as an auxiliary midfielder so he can spray passes to the forwards.

Trent needs to prove he is an above average defender, though, in order to start every game for Mourinho. In theory, he should be a lot higher than 20th on this list, but he needs to be more productive again in order to justify a better ranking.

19. Frenkie de Jong — Barcelona

Barcelona thrive off having midfielders who are masters at escaping pressure, and Frenkie de Jong is one of the best in the world at getting out of tight spaces in his own half and turn out of pressure into dangerous tantalizing transition opportunities in the Hansi Flick system.

While Barca are stacked in the middle of the park, FDJ is always important because of his ability to make clever touches and turns and keep the game ticking. Rodri and Pedri are bigger stalwarts, but De Jong plays a different role as more of a transition 8 who will move the ball from Rodri to Pedri into the final third.

The stats don’t reflect how good of a creator De Jong is, because he plays deeper and in more mucky areas of the pitch to actually get key passes and assists. Despite his insane technical quality, though, there are so many great midfielders in La Liga right now that this is the highest he can go.

18. Fermín López — Barcelona

While this ranking may seem a little bit high for Fermin Lopez, he fully deserves it and has become Barcelona’s biggest attacking threat after wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

The 23 year old scored six goals from midfield in La Liga last season and six in the Champions League, and he quietly had 14 combined goals in La Liga in the two seasons before that.

He scores so much because he has perfected the art of making late runs into the box and is one of the smartest midfielders in La Liga on the ball. Barcelona have other great midfielders, but Fermin is the most decisive in and around the box with that hunger to find more scoring opportunities. With 15 goal contributions last season, Fermin 100 percent belongs in the top 20.

17. Jules Koundé — Barcelona

Jules Kounde can shut down shop at either center or right back and can shadow mark any forward in La Liga, making him easily one of the best defenders in the Spanish top flight.

He is as reliable as they come, almost never getting dribbled past while needing few movements tracking back to erase the space and ensure that the Barcelona offside line is not beaten.

On the ball, Kounde is also one of the best, and he has been a great passer going back to his days at Sevilla. But now that he is playing more at right back for Barcelona, Kounde has advanced his dribbling quality and chance creation, not just his passing in possession, to the point where he has had three assists in the last two league seasons.

Kounde is the classic case of a great defender who can’t get rated higher than he is because of how much more opportunities attacking players get to truly change games for their teams.

16. Mikel Oyarzabal — Real Sociedad

You can’t tell the story of the last 10 years of La Liga without discussing Mikel Oyarzabal, who has only ever played for Real Sociedad as a senior player since joining La Real’s academy from Eibar’s as a young boy, and he has become a symbol of excellence in San Sebastian as they continue to fight for European places.

Oyarzabal does it all for Real Sociedad. Not only is he the leader of this team, but he is also a leading goal scorer with 15 goals last season to make it 5 career seasons with double digit league goals. Meanwhile, Oyarzabal is also a top class creator up top with 1.2 key passes in the 2025/26 season and at least 3 assists in each of the past 3 seasons.

He can play as a true striker, he can cut inside off the right wing, or he can even hold width and create on the left. Despite an amazing World Cup for Spain, Oyarzabal continues to get overshadowed, probably because his national team has bigger names and he plays in the league of forwards like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. If he can have a massive 2026/27 season to build off the World Cup, he could flirt with top 10 status.

15. Rodrygo Goes — Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham once told reporters on the CBS Sports Champions League broadcast that Rodrygo Goes is the most talented Real Madrid player in training, and it is easy to see that when he goes on a mazy dribble and finishes it off with a deft finish.

Rodrygo is the jack of all trades and can play anywhere in the pitch. For Real Madrid, he has started as a false nine, a left winger, a right winger, an attacking midfielder, a wide midfielder, or a striker in a two man system.

His versatility and the competition for places at Real Madrid impact his ability to settle into his best position and truly shine, because if he were in a situation where he started on the left wing every week, he’d be in the top five.

That’s because Rodrygo is such a great creator and scorer, and it feels like no matter what he has done in the Champions League or all the hard work he does, he is still not respected enough.

In order to make the top 10, Rodrygo has a lot of work to do. He has to get healthy from this ACL tear, stay healthy, and show the end product necessary of a top 10 La Liga star.

14. Arda Güler — Real Madrid

With more experience and plenty of hard work in the gym, Arda Guler is slowly but surely becoming a more complete midfielder for Real Madrid. He led all Champions League players in chances created last season with nine assists in La Liga, and he is becoming one of the best creative midfielders in the world, setting up Kylian Mbappe and the forwards beautiful in the final third.

Guler is now the main creative hub in the Real Madrid attack, but he still needs to fulfill more of his potential as his goal scoring and dribbling remain a bit lacking overall.

But Guler is not just a wonderkid at 21 years of age. Now, he is a legitimate superstar and nearly one of the top 10 players in the second biggest league in world football.

13. Federico Valverde — Real Madrid

Fede Valverde can play literally any position in the midfield, and he can even play on the wings or at right back, much to his dismay. The Uruguayan international is one of the most versatile players in La Liga, and that is a credit to his tactical intelligence.

Most importantly, he never stops working, and he has been the Roadrunner for Real Madrid ever since his 2019/20 La Liga season breakout under Zinedine Zidane, and his pace and strength make him one of the best athletes in Spanish football.

Real Madrid value him so highly because he can do so many different things in the middle of the park and elsewhere. He can score goals, create chances, and push the ball up the pitch and defend, with the latter two qualities as a progressor and ball winner essential to any Champions League contender.

Fede is at his best when he is in a box to box midfield role off the right where he can focus on winning the ball and shuttling it up for the forwards in transition. He has no glaring weaknesses to his game, and while players like Arda Guler, Rodrygo Goes, and Mikel Oyarzabal have more technical ability, Fede is a better footballer because he is so complete.

12. Julián Álvarez — Atlético Madrid

An elite finisher ever since he was a young prospect at River Plate, Julian Alvarez is one of the best pure goal scorers in world football, having netted a whopping 17 times in his first season at Atletico Madrid, which is crazy.

His scoring numbers fell off a bit in 2025/26, but his overall impact actually increased because of how much of a focus Diego Simeone puts on the other elements. And Alvarez has risen to the occasion as an elite pressing forward who never stops running for his team, including on offense to generate passing lanes for everyone.

Without Alvarez, Atletico simply do not have a functioning attack, as everything is built around him off the ball and as a finisher. If Atleti’s other players around him can step up in terms of progression and creativity, Alvarez could have the chances to score the goals to seal his status as a top five player. For now, though, his low numbers and lack of a spark on the ball in one on ones keeps him out of the top 10.

11. Yan Diomande — Real Madrid

Yan Diomande has come out of nowhere to become one of the biggest stars in world football, and he has a chance to win a Ballon d’Or one day. There are very few dribblers in the world on his level because of how direct he is at attacking the box and how quick he is in transition; he just might be the fastest player in the world on the ball. And with 20 goal contributions for RB Leipzig last season, his end product is already close to elite.

Real Madrid spent 140 million euros on him, but that’s exactly the hefty price it takes to sign a player of his quality. And Real Madrid know he has a chance to become a top five player in the world and worth almost double that.

That being said, Madridistas are used to paying for players who have proven performance like Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Jude Bellingham, though they have also found success with players like Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes who cost a fair bit but eventually became worth even more.

Ranking Diomande 11th before he even plays a single game in La Liga is definitely bold, but if he carries over what he did last season in the Bundesliga with more experience and a much better team and coaching staff around him, he has a great chance of even outperforming this ranking.

The Top 10

10. Joan García — Barcelona

It is not easy for a goalkeeper to make the top 10 list of the best players in a league, but Joan Garcia is so important to Barcelona already and so impressive as a shot stopper that it would be criminal not to rank him this high just because he is a keeper.

What makes Garcia so good are his cool head, reflexes, and security. He saved an insane 77.9 percent of the shots he faced last season in La Liga in his first season with Barcelona, and that already makes him one of the elite goalkeepers in the league statistically.

Without Garcia bailing Barcelona out of so many close games with his heroics and a high line in front of him, Barca would not have won the title. Goalkeepers like this can single handedly win you games, and while they are hard to find, these rare elite keepers are worth placing above even great strikers and midfielders like Oyarzabal and Guler.

9. Raphinha — Barcelona

With 31 goals and 13 assists in the last two La Liga seasons, Raphinha is one of the biggest goal contribution monsters in world football, and ever since Hansi Flick took over as Barcelona manager, the Brazilian international has busted out into a genuinely elite attacking player.

In addition to the goals and assists, Raphinha never stops running defensively for the team and pressing, which is essential to Barca’s success in the Flick system. Off the ball, he totally destabilizes defenses with his runs off the shoulder of the defender, maintaining acres of space for Lamine Yamal on the right as the focal point.

Because Raphinha is so good at crossing the ball and passing, he can create. Because he is so good at finishing, he can score. And because he is so good off the ball, he can impact games without touching it while still scoring in transitions.

Raphinha could easily, easily rank higher than ninth, and all he has to do to achieve that is have a healthier 2026/27 season than he did in 2025/26.

8. Pau Cubarsí — Barcelona

Even though Pau Cubarsi is still a teenager at the center back position, his age does not matter because he is already one of the best players in the world. Few center backs are as adept technically on the ball and at passing under pressure, and he never makes mistakes, no matter how big the game is.

Cubarsi does not have as many tackles as the other top center backs in La Liga because he is so good at reading the game that he does not even need to make the intervention; the striker won’t get the ball.

His composure, reading of the game, consistency, and quality on the ball are that of a player who has been a the top level for a decade. He is one of the world’s best center backs with the trophy case, including a World Cup, to prove it.

7. Rodri — Barcelona

If there were any doubts about Rodri’s status as an elite defensive midfielder and probably the best in his position, then the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner dispelled them by dominated his way to the World Cup Golden Ball.

He is such an intelligent player that the entire game will run through him, and he can find the exact right pass to make with the exact right weight pass in any situation, turning the whole game into an affair that just runs through him in the middle.

Barcelona will have stability they have not enjoyed since prime Sergio Busquets with Rodri now in their ranks, and he raises the entire floor of Barca by being able to anchor the midfield as a great player who rarely makes mistakes.

But he doesn’t get any higher than this not because he is lacking as a footballer but because the players above him are in their primes and can create more decisive actions without the risk of fatigue destroying their performances.

6. Pedri — Barcelona

Pedri is so silky smooth on the turn and has the ball tethered to his feet when he dribbles, and his natural agility and technical gifts are on another plane from the rest of the footballers in La Liga.

Not only is he great at creating chances with an insane 2.2 key passes per game in La Liga last season, but he almost never loses the ball and can thus keep it in dangerous areas in the final third for Barcelona to keep the pressure.

Pedri is a human metronome who sets how Barcelona attack in terms of timing and space, and the tempo of the game is dictated at his feet. No other midfielder in the world has as innate of a feel for the game in terms of space, the timing of the pass, and the location of where to be in the final third.

But getting into the top five of this league is insanely difficult, and the players in the top five are even more dangerous in terms of their ability to win games that are seemingly lost all on their own.

5. Thibaut Courtois — Real Madrid

In the La Liga Team of the Season four times, the Champions League Team of the Season twice, and boasting six league titles and three European trophies in his career with three elite clubs, Thibaut Courtois is firmly entrenched as the best goalkeeper in the world.

No keeper has his resume of big game saves right now, and all you have to do is watch what he did to Liverpool in the 2022 Champions League Final to see what he is capable of.

Courtois’ week to week consistency is insane, too. He has never had a single bad game for Real Madrid since that fateful night against Club Brugge in Fall 2019 when Tibo came alive.

Goalkeepers are often overlooked in lists like this, but the great goalkeepers, again, can win you games you should have lost, and Real Madrid owe Courtois a lot for their Dark Magic as a team.

He is Real’s most important player when you really think about it deeply. Real have other options in the attack, but they have a weak defense and Courtois is the last line.

So why isn’t he in the top four? The individual quality of the others and how many different things you have to be great at as a forward are too much for even an elite keeper, the best in the world, like Courtois to overcome.

4. Vinícius Júnior — Real Madrid

When it comes to one on one ability in world football, there are few players defenders would want to face less than Vinicius Junior. The Real Madrid left winger has recorded more than two dribbles completed per game in each of the last five La Liga seasons.

Defenders cannot cope with his pace and explosiveness on the break, and they have no idea where he is going to go with the ball or which move he is going to put on them.

And his end product has become elite, too. Vinicius Jr. has scored double digit goals from the wing in each of the last five seasons while averaging 1.7 and 1.9 key passes per game in the last two seasons.

Every week whenever Real Madrid play, you always hear about how the other team has an anti Vinicius plan, whether it is Pablo Maffeo, Ronald Araujo, or some other poor soul who has to mark Vini the whole field while the coach comes up with a specialized game plan.

Vinicius may not be the No. 1 player in La Liga right now, but he is one of world football’s biggest attacking weapons, capable of creating goals from pure nothingness.

3. Kylian Mbappé — Real Madrid

The reigning Pichichi winner for two seasons in his two seasons since coming to Madrid, the World Cup Golden Boot’s scoring production is undisputed at this point. And he has become the main point of reference for the Real Madrid attack, unquestionably leading them from a scoring perspective.

Once he gets into the box with the ball at his feet, nobody else in La Liga is as capable of finding the back of the net, as Mbappe has an array of finishes with finesse and power into either post.

Mbappe, at his best, is the No. 1 player in La Liga because of his explosiveness, goal scoring ability, and raw skills. It’s just that the two players ahead of him are more consistent and considerably better at winning within a team ethos.

2. Jude Bellingham — Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham is the most complete midfielder in world football, as he can score, create chances, win the ball defensively, and progress the ball forward with the ball at his feet.

He is a physical specimen in terms of his raw strength, yet he is far from a brute. He calculates the game with rapid intelligence to find solutions, both defensive and offensive, and anyone doubting his technical quality only needs to watch him dribble. Most importantly, Jude changes games with goals, and he nearly won the Pichichi in his first season back when the team was built around him and not Kylian Mbappe.

Bellingham can influence matches in all phases, both with the ball at his feet on offense and without it, as well as on defense. At just 23 years old, Jude is already this good, and it is hard to think of a single midfielder with as much long term potential when looking at his intelligence and raw athletic tools.

The only reason why he isn’t the best player in La Liga is because the best player in La Liga almost doesn’t even seem human.

1. Lamine Yamal — Barcelona

Lamine Yamal is the best player in La Liga because when you watch him play, you know he is the best. It sounds weird to put it that way, but anyone who watches the quality Yamal has on the ball in terms of his speed, agility, explosiveness, fearlessness, technique, and the way the entire game revolves around his ability to dribble around five players all at once is impossible to overlook.

Barcelona relies upon Yamal to change games on his own, and he is the decisive factor pretty much every time he is on the pitch. Last season, Yamal averaged 4.8 dribbles completed per game as, by far, the best one on one threat in La Liga while also averaging 2.6 key passes per match, also making him easily the best wide creator in the Spanish top flight.

Even though Yamal is primarily a creator and dribbler, he still scores, too, with 16 goals in the league last season, and anyone doubting his end product should also look at his 11 assists last season and his 13 before that.

Even though he is, insanely enough, still only 19 years old, he is THE focal point of Barcelona, and whenever he is out injured, Barca totally fall apart. At this point, the word “potential” does not even belong in the same sentence as Yamal, because everything he does from here on out is simply him building on already being the best. No single player in La Liga is as massive as Yamal in terms of jersey sales, cultural impact, and impact on the team. Nobody in La Liga carries the responsibility of the team, the all around attacking influence, and the pure footballing ability as Yamal.
