Deniz Undav and Pascal Groß looked sure to leave Brighton this summer. Now, it seems like the Seagulls’ two star Germans might be sticking around for at least another season.
Brighton Technical Director David Weir told The Athletic that the club’s chances of holding onto both Undav and Groß are “very high.”
“They are contracted to Brighton and they are players that have done well for us,” Weir said, “hey are two players that we are expecting to be back with us and looking forward to being part of our squad. A lot of things have been written and said, but ultimately nothing has changed from our perspective.”
The former Scotland international also revealed that Brighton’s new manager Fabian Hürzeler has already spoken to Undav and Groß.
“They are players we really like, Fabian has spoken to both players. We really hope they will be here moving forward,” he said.
For Brighton fans’ sakes, let’s hope Weir is telling the truth. Groß is one of the best and most creative midfielders in the Premier League. If the Seagulls lose him to Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, or any other club, I have a hard time seeing them replacing him.
Undav hasn’t performed at his best with Brighton, but after a breakout season in Germany with Stuttgart, he could easily come in and be the Seagulls’ best forward. The newly-minted German international had 18 goals and 10 assists in the league for Stuttgart.
If he has half as many goals and assists for Brighton as he did for Stuttgart, he will probably lead the Seagulls in goal contributions next season.
Undav has reportedly agreed to a £20m move to Stuttgart permanently. According to Weir though, Brighton are confident they can convince him to stay and give it another go in the Premier League next season.
