Explaining why Bayern Munich want to hire Erik ten Hag despite massive criticism

Bayern Munich are in the market for a new manager, as Thomas Tuchel will be stepping down at the end of the 2023/24 season and has no interest in anybody changing his mind, even if Die Roten were to win the Champions League.

Tuchel and the board have reached the point of no return due to a barrage of criticism, including public remarks from Uli Hoeneß that the controversial Bayern Munich legend has been unwilling to walk back.

When it comes to searching for a replacement, Bayern Munich still have a number of options despite Xabi Alonso’s rejection and Zinedine Zidane’s continued lack of interest in the position.

The most surprising candidate is Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag, whose future at Old Trafford may actually be safe despite massive internal criticism, especially from fans and the media.

Ten Hag’s stock reached a new low when Jadon Sancho, whom he feuded with and subsequently banished, put in an all-time Champions League semifinal performance in a 1-0 Dortmund win over PSG.

Bayern Munich’s interest in Erik ten Hag surprises most football fans in Bavaria, Manchester, and around the world. Sky Sports reporters Melissa Reddy, Kerry Hau, and Florian Plettenberg had an explanation for why Die Roten want the oft-criticized Dutch manager:

“Feeling at Bayern is Erik ten Hag’s coaching credentials haven’t been maximised by Manchester United due to off-field turbulence and lack of structure (a view shared by INEOS). Could be one of those situations that suit all parties – including Thomas Tuchel?! – bar the need to wait till the end of the season for clarity. Interest is concrete but everything else is up in the air.”

Erik ten Hag did indeed lead Manchester United to the Champions League in a successful first season at the helm, and no team in the Premier League has been more hampered by injuries in 2023/24 than the Red Devils.

It seems like every week, there is a new serious injury affecting Man United. While ten Hag’s tactics and treatment of players like Sancho are up for criticism, Bayern Munich aren’t wrong to feel that, to a certain extent, the former Ajax manager has become an easy target to pile on. INEOS appear to be having the same thought about ten Hag, too.

But then again, people could say that worse have happened to better managers in Bavaria, such as Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann, and now Thomas Tuchel. Bayern Munich could easily repeat history with a less highly-regarded coach in ten Hag.
