Xabi Alonso could bring one of his former Real Madrid teammates to Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen are still undefeated in the Bundesliga after drawing Stuttgart 2-2 with a last-gasp goal from Robert Andrich, so former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso’s unstoppable season continues.

Alonso has become the hottest name in coaching in world football, and after rejecting both Bayern Munich and Liverpool (two other former clubs of his) in order to remain in Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season, Real Madrid fans believe he is headed to the Spanish capital in the future as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement.

Before then, Alonso might actually bring one of Real Madrid’s veteran players with him to Bayer Leverkusen, signing a man he worked with when he brought home La Decima in 2014.

According to a report from COPE’s Miguel Angel Diaz, Bayer Leverkusen are showing interest in versatile Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez.

A five-time Champions League winner, Nacho is still a key man for Real Madrid at the age of 34. Injuries to David Alaba and Eder Militao increased Nacho’s importance, as he has made 15 starts this season.

Leverkusen have quite possibly the best collection of young defenders in Europe, but they could use some more veteran help. Plus, they will likely lose their most senior player, Jonathan Tah, this summer, with Bayern Munich heavily interested.

Nacho is on an expiring contract and could be another brilliant free-agent signing for Bayer Leverkusen. Although he has stayed at Real Madrid as a backup in the past, there’s a feeling that 2024 could be a different case for Nacho.

He may want a bigger role elsewhere, especially with Real Madrid interested in signing Ligue 1 phenom Leny Yoro to pair with Militao as a long-term starter.

Alonso knows that with Leverkusen set to play in the Champions League next season, the club will need a veteran with experience in this competition.

There is literally nobody better for that “glue” role than a five-time champion like Nacho in central defense (and maybe at left or right back in a pinch, too).
