The LW Arsenal could sign who would actually be an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli

Arsenal were supposed to be the biggest buyers for a striker in the summer transfer window, and they were also heavily linked with signing a winger – or even two – for depth purposes.

Instead, Arsenal look increasingly likely to stick with the quintet of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Leandro Trossard, and Bukayo Saka as their main attack next season.

A move in the final days of the summer window for an attacker should not be ruled out, but it seems like Arsenal are mostly looking at depth options, such as a backup goalkeeper to replace Aaron Ramsdale, rather than a blockbuster No. 9 like Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen.

Interestingly enough, the biggest name now linked to Arsenal from an attacking perspective is a transfer target for the summer 2025 transfer window, as the Daily Mail have linked Arsenal with interest in Newcastle star Anthony Gordon.

Pretty much every elite club in England has been linked to Gordon at some point, but he currently plays for a pretty prestigious club right now in Saudi-owned Newcastle, who qualified for the Champions League in the 2023/24 season before finishing the Premier League campaign outside the top four.

Newcastle haven’t been that active in the summer transfer window this year either, and if they don’t finish in the top four this season, then maybe a club like Arsenal or Liverpool, who have been most strongly linked to the England international, could swoop in and sign him.

Arsenal are wise to throw their hats into the ring for a transfer, though if Newcastle were to sell the 23-year-old, then they would not be ready to entertain offers until potentially 2025 – and even then they may not be interested in listening to anything less than an exorbitant 100 million euro offer.

But a lot of Gordon’s future fee depends on his contract situation. He and Newcastle are still ironing out details of a new deal, because his current contract expires in 2026.

Therefore, if Newcastle can’t get Gordon to sign a new deal by next June, it stands to reason that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, or whoever else is interested could sign him before he has a chance to leave for free that winter.

Arsenal already have a very good left winger in Gabriel Martinelli, but he only had 6 goals and 4 assists last season. Meanwhile, Gordon was one of the biggest breakout stars in European football and the best left winger in the Premier League in 2023/24 with 11 goals and 10 assists.

Both Martinelli and Gordon are young with upside, and while Martinelli is arguably more gifted, Gordon is more consistent and still has that ability to take over games all on his own as an attacker.

Gordon is one of the few – if the only – possible left winger in English football who could be deemed a potential upgrade on Martinelli. With the way other top clubs in the Premier League are stockpiling wingers like Man City and Chelsea, Arsenal could join in and have four great wingers next season in Trossard, Gordon, Martinelli, and Saka.
