Real Madrid can sign a top left back at a bargain fee, but they won’t for a simple reason

Real Madrid are in desperate need of a top left back, and they’ve been searching for a star player at the position ever since Marcelo starting obviously declining during the 2018/19 season.

Replacing a legend like Marcelo, one of the best left backs in history, is no easy feat, and the Merengues clearly don’t have the solution between either Ferland Mendy or Fran Garcia.

Mendy has been favored by Carlo Ancelotti despite showing obvious technical and tactical failures over the past few seasons, while Garcia has never really settled in Madrid since re-joining the club after emerging as a top La Liga back for Rayo Vallecano.

And before Fran, Real Madrid had a very intriguing and gifted left back in Miguel Gutierrez, but Carlo decided to send him off to Girona after stuffing him on the bench, believing Miguel to be too much of a defensive liability.

Miguel has gone on to shine even more brightly than Fran for Girona, who gave Real Madrid a little bit of a push in the La Liga title race during the 2023/24 season.

Now, per Diario AS, Real Madrid can purchase Miguel Gutierrez from Girona either next year for nine million euros or in 2026 for ten million euros, making him a massive steal on the transfer market; he’d go for at least triple that amount on the open market with his playmaking skills.

However, Real Madrid aren’t going to cash in on the bargain of Miguel, simply because their priority is to sign impending Bayern Munich free agent Alphonso Davies, who remains no closer to signing a new contract with Die Roten than before.

Davies only didn’t sign with Real Madrid last summer because the club is so confident they can steal him from their main historic Champions League rivals for free.

Arguably the best left back in the world, Davies is a dream transfer target for Juni Calafat, who even started to prioritize the Canadian as highly as Kylian Mbappe during the 2023/24 season.

Davies has bounced back nicely in the 2024/25 season under new manager Vincent Kompany, and Miguel can thank the former winger for why Real Madrid aren’t guaranteeing his nine million euro signing; Davies is even better and cheaper than Miguel.
