Desperation doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling that should be reverberating around the walls of the Valdebebas after Real Madrid lost their best defender to a season-ending ACL tear on Saturday against Osasuna.
For the second straight season, Eder Militao is down for the count, joining the club’s only other elite defensive option, Dani Carvajal, on the injured list with a torn ACL.
And with Lucas Vazquez injured for a weeks, too, with David Alaba still on the shelf from his own ACL tear last year, Real Madrid have dwindling options across their back line.
As it stands right now, Antonio Rudiger is their only healthy senior center back, the club doesn’t have a single option at right back besides Castilla talent Jesus Fortea, and the left back position remains a revolving door between equally underwhelming options Fran Garcia and Ferland Mendy.
Center back has become the big priority, though. It was already an area of need heading into the January transfer window, but Militao’s injury has turned the position into a disaster zone that must be addressed immediately.
Unfortunately, Real Madrid don’t sound like they are going to entertain the most immediate upgrade they could make, even though club legends like Guti are calling for the team to reunite with the gargantuan figure that is Sergio Ramos.
Per MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz, Real Madrid are not even considering signing Ramos, despite the fact that he could be signed right here, right now as a free agent and has been teasing a return to the club on social media.
Ramos was excellent for Sevilla before leaving La Liga and was actually outperforming Rudiger in the same league. A former right back, Ramos, in theory, could be a better option at the position than Fede Valverde as a makeshift fullback.
Although Real Madrid don’t like to go back to players they moved on from, that seems to be more of a Florentino Perez ego problem than a problem of Ramos being too old to help the team.
Without Ramos, Real Madrid are going to have to stumble into January with nothing besides Raul Asencio and Antonio Rudiger at center back, which should have big teams like Liverpool salivating at what they can do to this undermanned Madrid defense.
