Manchester United had a predictably disappointing showing in Ruben Amorim’s debut as their new manager, as they couldn’t capitalize on a great start with a goal in the second minute from Marcus Rashford, drawing Ipswich Town 1-1 in a game they should have lost.
Only Andre Onana’s heroics could spare Manchester United an outright loss against one of the Premier League’s relegation candidates, as the Red Devils very much look like a squad that belongs in the bottom half of the table.
The attacking output was concerningly poor, with the doomed-to-fail midfield tandem of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro overrun. Only Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes seemed to offer any sort of a consistent threat, as Rashford floundered after his tap-in goal while Alejandro Garnacho produced a disasterclass.
Manchester United are clearly in need of a summer 2025 attacking overhaul and a true goal-scoring striker, with Amorim likely viewing Joshua Zirkzee as unfavorably as the fanbase, who wondered why the Red Devils spent upwards of 40 million euros on a striker who simply doesn’t score goals.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that The Mirror is reporting that Manchester United are prioritizing Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres as their top transfer target at any position in the summer 2025 window.
Gyokeres scored a hat trick against Manchester City in the Champions League to affirm his status as the hottest transfer target in world football, as top clubs in both England and Spain are lining up to land the Swedish sensation.
Of course, it was Manchester United manager Amorim who unearthed Gyokeres as an elite goal-scoring machine, and there’s a belief that if he wants him next summer, it is Man United’s race to lose.
But Gyokeres will have better clubs interested in him, and he may want to spread his wings behind Amorim. He certainly isn’t attached to the manager, despite their positive working relationship in Lisbon.
Still, Manchester United do need to go as hard as they can after the 26-year-old forward, because with 16 goals in 11 league matches and 5 in 4 Champions League fixtures, he is a considerably better scoring option than any of Man United’s current strikers.
