Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer was crucial to the club reaching the Champions League Final last season, but his play has fallen off a cliff this season. Per a report from Sky Sport Italia’s top transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter will not be re-signing Sommer this year and will let him walk in free agency this summer 2026 tranfer window.
Sommer is one of the best goalkeepers of his generation. He was a secret superstar for years with Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga and the latest shutdown Swiss goalkeeper.
He memorably set a record for the most saves in a Bundesliga game in yet another upset of Bayern Munich and once stopped a clutch Kylian Mbappe penalty in the European knockout stages.
After a brief stint as Manuel Neuer’s emergency replacement with Bayern Munich, Sommer joined Inter as a free agent in 2023 and was immediately the best goalkeeper in a stacked Italian league at the position with an insane save percentage above 82.
Now set to win his second Scudetto with Inter, Sommer is still saving over 71 percent of the shots he has faced but is making more mistakes this season despite recently recovering his form somewhat.
Per Di Marzio, Inter want to go younger at the goalkeeper position. It will be interesting to see if they join Juventus by throwing their hats into the ring for Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi, one of the newest stars in goal in Serie A.
