After losing to Bodo Glimt in the Champions League, Inter Milan know they have a lot of work to do if they want to be Champions League winners again, and they have designs on transforming their squad into a younger, more explosive version – and that starts with rebuilding the midfield.
New manager Christian Chivu, a former Inter midfielder himself, has done a wonderful job of taking over from former top manager Simone Inzaghi, and Tuttosport reports that for the 2026/27 season, he is eyeing changing the formation to a 3-4-2-1.
To facilitate that transition, he wants to sign his guys in midfield. And he is looking at three dynamic box-to-box options in coveted Atalanta star Ederson, reclamation project Leon Goretzka of Bayern Munich fame in free agency, and another underrated Serie A star in Roma’s Manu Kone.
Inter are also looking at other potential big signings, but the key appears to be revamping the midfield with some of the best athletes in the game at the No. 8 position to make it all work.
Of these three players, Kone, Ederson, and Goretzka are all easy to sign, but Goretzka is the easiest if the Nerazzurri can swallow his wages. Athletic midfielders do well in Serie A, as Scott McTominay can attest, and Goretzka has been needing a change in scenery for years
Kone and Ederson are proven commodities in Serie A and have a lot more legs to give than, say, Henrik Mkhitaryan, bringing in the ball-winning and ball progression Inter need.
