The Premier League is loaded with attacking talent right now, especially when it comes to wingers in the primes of their careers.
With about half of the 2023/24 season in the books, let’s try to rank the 10 best wingers in the English top flight based on overall pedigree and current performance.
10. Dejan Kulusevski, Tottenham
Since Son Heung-min is playing as a striker, Dejan Kulusevski is the Tottenham winger who gets ranked on the list. He’s having another very strong season for Spurs, who were in the Premier League title mix for much of the season.
Even now, Tottenham are in contention to return to the Champions League after missing out on European football entirely. Kulusevski has helped step up with Harry Kane gone to Bayern Munich, scoring goals but doing a lot more creatively.
The former Juventus man is averaging 2.3 key passes per game for Tottenham and is one of the most consistent wingers in the league on a week-to-week basis.
9. Luis Díaz, Liverpool
Meanwhile, consistency has seemingly evaded Luis Díaz, who hasn’t been at his best since an injury last season. It’s been a tough season for the Liverpool left winger, too, especially after the kidnapping of his parents.
Nobody can deny Díaz’s quality, though. He is one of the most electrifying wingers in world football, though we haven’t seen that level of quality yet in 2023/24.
A rebound from the 26-year-old Colombian international should be on the horizon. Even when he is not at his best, Díaz still has to be recognized as one of the top wingers in the league.
8. Jarrod Bowen, West Ham
Out of all the players on this list, Jarrod Bowen has the best chance of skyrocketing up this list. The English winger helped lead West Ham to the Conference League title in the 2022/23 season, playing inspired football in the final.
This season, Bowen has been even more decisive for a Hammers side that is currently in a European qualification place, even though last season they were one of the most disappointing teams in the Premier League.
With 11 goals, Bowen is leading the line by example and showing a clinical touch that most wingers do not have.
Bowen provides a lot more than goals, but since he’s been in more central positions this season, he’s been able to get in those situations. Better yet, the 27-year-old is making good on them.
7. Jack Grealish, Manchester City
While Bowen could have been ranked higher than Jack Grealish since this English winger’s importance in the Manchester City XI has faded, it would be unfair to dock the former Aston Villa star.
Grealish is still one of the most talented players in the Premier League at any position and a world-class winger who is among the best in Europe at his role – not just the English top flight.
Entering the peak of his career at 28, Grealish is a hard-working progressive winger whom no fullback wants to face, often resorting to harsh fouls against him.
6. Jérémy Doku, Manchester City
The newest addition to the Manchester City attack, Jérémy Doku has been his team’s top performer on the wings when solely looking at 2023/24 performance and has been one of the best overall players in the Premier League.
Despite not even reaching 700 Premier League minutes to this point, Doku has five assists. The 21-year-old Belgian phenom is averaging four dribbles completed per match and looks like the next big thing for the Citizens.
It feels like Pep Guardiola is just waiting to truly unleash Doku on the rest of English football.
5. Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal
Arsenal left winger Gabriel Martinelli is one of the best goal-scoring wingers in European football. Last season, he proved that point with 15 goals for the Gunners in their Premier League title bid.
Still only 22 years of age, Martinelli is a matchwinner for Arsenal and someone who brings the very best to the table when his team needs it the most at the end of matches.
4. Phil Foden, Manchester City
It’s hard to know exactly where to rank Phil Foden among the best wingers in the Premier League, because he isn’t a pure winger. However, that has been his main position for Manchester City in a versatile, jack-of-all-trades role.
No matter what people say about him, Foden manages to consistently be important to Guardiola’s plans at the Etihad. The England international has four goals and four assists this season, too, filling up the stat sheet in all aspects.
3. Bernardo Silva, Manchester City
Bernardo Silva is an even classier player who has the versatility to shine as a center midfielder, attacking midfielder, or right winger with that trusty left boot of his. A rare talent in world football, Silva finds spaces that don’t seem to exist on the pitch.
Just about the perfect player for Pep Guardiola, you can see why Silva is so coveted by top clubs around European football, such as Real Madrid and Barcelona. Silva can score great goals, progress the ball, create chances, and even defend at a high level.
2. Bukayo Saka, Arsenal
Not being able to rank Bukayo Saka comes down more to the absolute legend in front of him, because Saka is a Ballon d’Or-level player in himself.
He may not have the electricity or raw talent of a Vinícius Júnior at Real Madrid or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in Napoli, but Saka is honestly even more consistent than those two superstar left wingers.
It doesn’t hurt that the unselfish Arsenal man plays on the right side of the attack, given the scarcity of left-footed players. Saka can score goals, create chances, hold width, track back, and do all the little things a leader needs to do.
Thanks to Saka, Arsenal are once again favorites to win the Premier League at the mid-season point.
1. Mohamed Salah, Liverpool
It is impossible to deny Mohamed Salah’s place at the head of the table of Premier League wingers. He is the best right winger in the world and is honestly an all-timer.
The Liverpool icon has scored at least 19 goals in 6 difference Premier League seasons. He is already on pace for more in 2023/24 with 12 goals and 7 assists on a resurgent Reds side fighting for the league title again.
Salah is a generational talent, the kind of player who is remembered in English football for decades and decades to come.
