Liverpool have a pretty good midfield in the 2024/25 season thanks to the breakout of 2023 summer signing Ryan Gravenberch, who looks like a completely different player under Arne Slot.
After failing to cut the mustard with Bayern Munich after a widely-regarded transfer from Ajax, Gravenberch didn’t get much of a chance to shine in the middle of the park last season under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield either.
In fairness, Liverpool had three other brilliant summer signings in midfield who helped the Reds return to Premier League title contention – Stuttgart’s Wataru Endo, Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister, and, of course, RB Leipzig superstar Dominik Szoboszlai.
Gravenberch has been better than all three of those guys in the 2024/25 Premier League season, but despite the Dutchman’s excellence under the ex-Feyenoord coach, Liverpool still want a traditional holding No. 6.
Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi is coveted by a number of elite clubs around European football, but, so far, he has shown no interest in being tempted by transfers to Barcelona or Arsenal.
So strong is his sentiment that Liverpool coach Arne Slot openly disregarded the club’s chances of signing Zubimendi, writing off the transfer rumors as a non-story, especially in light of Gravenberch’s breakout.
But Zubimendi and Gravenberch are different players, and while Slot will always back Gravenberch publicly, Fabrizio Romano reports on hi YouTube channel that Zubi remain a topic for Liverpool in the transfer market.
Liverpool could go for Zubimendi as early as January, though, to be honest, it is difficult to envision a Champions League contender like Real Sociedad selling a player who is easily their most important – and only increased in importance after Mikel Merino left to the Premier League this summer.
Still, the overarching takeaway is that nobody should be writing off Zubimendi as a possible Liverpool transfer target in 2025, because, really, if the Spanish international is willing to leave Real Sociedad, who would say no to signing him?
